Ooo-nooes! My transition from Camel Snus sucked today

My apology in advance for the wordy post...

Early last fall, I purchased a half dozen tins of that scrumptious, yummy Camel snus that everyone here raves about. They sat in the fridge, untouched, for a few weeks until one evening in October, after 20+ years of smoking a pack/day, I decided I wanted to make a serious attempt at quitting smoking altogether. I put a pouch in my mouth and let it do its thing (which probably included a slight burn of my gums since the first tin was Frost) while I relaxed in the evening. It seemed promising.

The next day, I reached for a pouch before I got the urge to light up. I used six that first day, five the next and was happy with four pouches/day within a week thereafter. Soon, I found I was perfectly comfortable with three/day. Since early December, I've had a surprising number of "2-pouch" days mixed with my typical 3-pouch days. Yes, I've kept track of my daily usage. I've not smoked since that day in October, and I don't think I've really had even the desire to smoke since the second or third week of snusing. It's been nice.

With the exception of a few cans of General Mini Mints purchased locally, all of my snus consumed has been of the Camel variety, mostly Mellow. Today, I decided to try some of the snus I recently ordered. I started with a General Mint (white, large portion). It was okay; the mint flavor was more faint than what I've experienced with the Mini Mints. I also didn't notice a "nic hit" in comparison to what I've enjoyed with the Camel and Mini Mints. I'm thinking Fine, I'll appreciate the taste in due time. Later on, I decided to try a Roda Lacket (white portion) for my evening snus today. I've read these RL portions have good flavor but are slightly sweet to some users. Well, it wasn't what I anticipated. It's been in my mouth for a while, and I feel like I have a paper towel shoved up under my lip. I never noticed any sweetness at all. Did I read the wrong reviews?

To all ye snusers out there, may I ask What the hell is wrong with me? If it helps, my smoking habit was Camel nonfilters for the first couple of years, followed by menthols for the remaining 20 years. What gets me is that the Camel snus and General Mini Mints that I had been using are supposed to be weaker in nicotine content in comparison to the General Mint and RL portions I had today. But I think I was less satisfied today than I would have been if I just had two of the comparatively tame Mini Mints instead. I was your common smoker before, with strong cravings and the occasional nic fit when I had to go without a smoke for hours on end. I know that many of you recommend strong portions or sterks for those quitting cigarettes, but my nicotine urges were comfortably satisfied with those lousy Camel snus and weakish Mini Mints. I was even expecting to remove the Gen Mint and RL a bit early, since I didn't want to overdo the nicotine. But that wasn't the case at all. Even a cup of coffee didn't seem to bring these fellas to life. Coffee always brought the others back from the dead after they'd been in my mouth for some time but still had something left to offer.

Is it possible that a person could have a stronger need for flavor than he/she would need the nicotine? FWIW, my immediate and ongoing goal is to keep my nicotine at a manageable, yet comfortable and low level. I'm certain I still need a basic level of nicotine for my physical well being, my focus, and for the safety of those around me. But as a former smoker that was burdened with the ups and downs that go with a cigarette habit, I have no desire to drive up my nicotine tolerance in my quest for sufficient flavor. I feel like I've come a long way. My long term goal is to be nicotine free, but that's not immediate.

Do you have any snus recommendations that I might consider? Mocca, Goat Rape minis, and Taboka are currently in consideration. I was thinking about Thunder Frosted minis, but not sure. I like the idea of staying with white portions since less drip works better for me, though these today seemed a bit too dry. Minis are a plus for their discretion and their usually lower nic content.

[Or maybe you'd suggest I just suck it up and stick with these *bland* portions until my senses acclimate.]

If you've made it this far in this ridiculously long post, thank you. If not...well, I understand.

I say stick with what works. No need to get used to sterks or even the high pH of swedish snus. If the camels are working for you at 3 per day....bye all means man, stick with the camels until you are fully off nicotine...which shouldn't be too long.

What Snusmum said. If t works for you, why change? Try other Snus every now and again, if you feel like some variety, but I wouldn't worry about it.

There are some of us that look down on Camel snus, but in reality, there are a bunch of us that came to snus via Camel. I tend to think of it as that slutty girl from High School that you really don't want to admit you did, but it was hot and you would probably do it again if you had the chance.

I still sneak some of my wife's Camel snus here and there because I love the flavor after about 30 minutes. it has a creamy tasting mint flavor that no one else has even come close to.

As for Swedish snus? It's a whole different ball game. There is no harm in using what YOU like, after all, it is YOU who lives with it daily.

        Enjoy bud!

It's perfectly possible that the heavy flavor has a good deal to do with it. I notice very little difference going from a regular 8mg snus, to a Thunder that has double the nicotine. I just used the Thunder because I liked the wintergreen flavor.

Brands like Skruf, Skruf Stark, and Roda Lacket taste like pretty much nothing to me. Just having high nicotine content doesn't quell my urge for a snus.

The thing with the Camel and Mini-mint is your mind is probably replacing the nicotine need with the heavy mint taste/fell from those. I get it too even though I don't like the camels (tastes like a bag of sweetener to me).

I'd suggest the Thunder Mini's. Or even the new Thunder Long+ that has come out. You might also try the Discreet brand. Small pouches with big flavor and that sweetness you're partial to.

The only reason I advise against this is the fact that we have no clue what Camel is using as their ingredients, or the process they use. With Swedish snus you know whats in it, and how it is prepared.

I am with everyone else, if you like the flavor, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. But I won't use the American snus until they measure up to the swedish snus.

To the OP I will say this, your experience is not unlike a lot of new snus users. But if you use Swedish snus for even a couple of days, I can almost gaurantee (Almost) that your opinion will change. Swedish snus definitely takes a couple of days for your taste buds to become acclimated. That is why so many snus users end up liking brands and flavors of snus that they formerly disliked. It is definitely an aquired taste, doesn't take long, but since its nothing like what we have ever tried before, it does take a bit of time.

Keep at it, I am sure you will like it if given a fair chance.

Just adding my personal experience with Camel. I probably went through about 30-40 tins of that stuff when I quit smoking, over a 2 month period. I was chain snussing the hell out of them. The main reason I switched was because I was branching out, I started to get sick of the Camel flavors! So, basically what others have said here, if it is working for you and you like it, why change?? For me, I think part of it was the sweetness of Camel, I am a sucker when it comes to yummy sweet stuff but it just got boring real quick after using it day in and day out.

I think discreet is probably right up your alley.

I don't really notice much difference between high nicotine content snus and regular portions though sterks usually have more tobacco flavor. Most of the Swedish brands have a pretty subtle flavor other then smoke/pepper or citrus. The other tastes came slowly for me. I really want to try Goat Rape in my next order and I haven't tried mocca flavor yet either but I do like Taboka. It is a little mild but has good tobacco flavor. I don't think you would appreciate it much if you don't like Rhoda Lacket. RL has a comparatively subtle flavor to Camel but it does have a nice fruit flavor IMO. Thunder minis would probably also be a good one to try and as the American market grows we are seeing a lot more heavily flavored products as time goes on. I do think it would be a good idea to try to find some Swedish alternatives to the Camel since as others have said we don't really know about how it is made and it is much more expensive. You would probably have enjoyed Triumph but unfortunately it has gone with the wind.

I also like to flavor my own snus with extracts and I also sometimes add a drop of liquid stevia to sweeten things up but I have been using a lot of the traditional stuff lately.

Really there are just so many varieties out there have fun trying them all. If you don't love them just keep them refrigerated or frozen and try them again in a few weeks. Its an adventure.

Just adding on here: like RRK said, Thunder Minis. To me, the spearmint one is a very natural flavor, compared to Camel Frost. I also like Thunder Berry once in a while and for being a sterk sized portion, they are pretty thin and flat so I find these to be relatively discreet. I personally can't handle all the nicotine though, crossing fingers for a berry mini! Come to think of it, as I enjoy a berry portion right now, I don't think these are much larger than Camel's portion, maybe even flatter, if my memory of Camel serves me right.

I will echo this. Thunder Frosted Minis aren't too high on the nic scale, though are higher than Camel and General Mini Mints. The nice mint burn that a thunder gives might be something you'd like (although the thunder frosted is a spearmint instead of the kinda mint taste you'd get from the Camel Frost).

But I'll also echo what everyone else has said as well... if you like the Camel snus line, by all means keep it up and enjoy! The most important part is that you are no longer chained to the cigarette, and many of us here are very thankful to snus for that! It feels so nice not having cigarettes on the mind at all times of the day, and it's nice to have nice smelling clothing, not have a cigarette smelling car, and not having to carry a lighter everywhere! I don't know about anyone else, but losing a lighter was always a horrible feeling... and lighting a cigarette on the stove just made me feel like a junkie. lol

I say snus is like wine...just use what you like and don't worry about it. I like alot of Offroad and Discreet products myself, which some say are too sweet or just plain bad in the case of Offroad, but to me they're good so that's what I use the most of.

Camel Snus is like riding a moped. It's fun until someone else see's you riding it or you actually have to go somewhere on it.
