Dry snus and best before dates

So I found a tobacco store about an hour away from where I live that carries snus. I picked up a few cans of general los, portion and white portion, and I noticed that the best before dates were all either 9/09 or 12/90. The los looked pretty dry, but I rehydrated it with a moist piece of paper towel sandwiched in tin fold (with holes in it). I did the same with the portion. The los was pretty difficult to form into a pris. The portions were alright but I suspect they were in the same shape as the los. I didn't feel like I was getting much from the los, though there was some flavor from the portions.

I have since tried some los and portions from getsnus.com, and noticed a marked difference from the cans I bought from the store. I hate wasting tobacco, but should I just toss the store-bought stuff? Can snus get to a point where it's just too dried out to be enjoyable?

Welcome to the forum. I don't think snus can get too dry.
I remember a member here saying to put a cucumber slice in the tin and letting it sit for a couple hours to rehydrate snus, so you could give that a try.

If it's dry, it's dry. Snus shouldn't be dry.

Hi Turbo. You can probably get it to where it's tolerable, but unless things are tight it might be best just to toss it.

I just hydrated some portions with this method as I couldn't find an aspirator that my wife didn't have filled with something.

I spread the portion out evenly on a plate. Took two paper towels and drenched them. Squeeze out all the water you can. you want it wet but not dripping at all. Open the paper towel and lay it over the snus portions. Revisit in 30 minutes as the moisture will transfer fast. It'll take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. I've never tried this with white portions though as I think it would make them too wet. For these I'd recommend putting them in a well sealed container with a cucumber slice, carrot, lettuce, etc. This will take much longer but beware if you use fruit or anything with a scent that might transfer to the snus.

As for los, I've only spread it on a plate and misted it with a spray bottle with distilled water. I've had mixed results with this...I usually get over zealous and make it too moist then have to dry it a bit again.

It's worth trying before you pitch them. I've used year-old snus before and didn't find it bad.

With los you can just drop in a bit of distilled water, shake it up, and break up any chunks with a fork if it seems too dry. Portions are a little harder to moisturize but dropping in some citrus peel, cucumber slice, or damp paper towel would help if left in overnight. Good luck

It won't taste as good as fresh, but it's usable just about forever. I have a hard time tossing snus, so I'd use it a bit at a time, maybe alternating with fresh snus.

Thanks for the replies. I found that the portions were more usable than the los, because the los was a little too dry to form into a pris.

Also, do the white portions have a lower moisture content than the original portions, or is it just that the pouch material is different? As I understand it, white portions usually last longer in your mouth but take longer to get going, whereas you can taste original portions sooner but they don't last as long.

yea white portions are drier than original portions. original portions get sprayed with a tobacco juice before being packaged, white portions skip this step completely.

Just dump your los out in a bowl and stir in a little water, not too much though, and that always worked for me.
