It's oral tobacco mixed with betelnut and flavorings. Having grown up in the Bay Area it was very easy to find under the counter at any market operated by Indians. I used it every now and then until I discovered it was very, very, very bad for your health. Looks like they got into something else.

Makes we wish there were some Scandinavian run markets around to buy things under the counter from.

Yeah, I'm somewhat skeptical of any Indian-manufactured tobacco product. If you read the epidemiology, Indian oral tobacco is infinitely worse for you than American. Gutka is some heavy shite.

TO step in for Indian tobacco for a minute, it depends on which type you get. Indian chew and betel nuts are both carcinogenic. I've used both, I don't suspect personally they're any worse for you than a can of Skoal. When you combine betel and tobacco though, the cancer risk increases synergistically. In other words, when combined it's worse for you than both risks simply added together.
