How long do you thaw before using?

I posted in another thread that got me thinking: what are your methods of freezing/thawing for best taste/consistancy?

Instead of typing it all again, I'll just quote myself:

Its the way freezer burn works - when any item, food or snus, is in the freezer, the water molecules attempt to migrate to the coldest place possible.

With say, a steak, this is why when freezer burn happens, you get a big glob of ice at one end of the meat, and the rest is all dried out and nasty.

With snus, the moisture ends up migrating to the sides of the can, taking some flavor with it. So the portions/los at the sides will have more moisture and flavor, while the portions/los in the middle will be dryer and more bland. (The old *better* style Thunder Frosted would actually have ice crystals all over the sides and bottom of the can when I'd open the lid while they were still frozen.)

Letting them thaw slowly for a few days lets the moisture/flavor even out between them/it all, making them/it taste exactly as the manufacturer intended.

Ive experimanted with using snus straight out of the freezer, thawed on the counter for an hour or so, and thawed in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Thawed in the fridge for 3-4 days FTW! Just tastes much better this way. 8)

.....Or maybe I'm just a rambling idiot that makes no sense.

EDIT: I should also say that once its done thawing, and I open it and start to use it, that can never sees the fridge/freezer again.

I think you got it right. 3-4 days seems like a decent amount of time. For some reason, snus does not taste right unless it matures for a few days. I have noticed that the portions are quite bland unless they have aged a bit.

I think it depends on the snus. Most snus, I have never tasted anything different. But a few, an absolutely huge difference. Best example, Phantom Brown Sucked new but much, much better after being left out to age a few days.

To answer the original question, I don't thaw that first snus out of the freezer. Just stick it in and move on.

Sage - you don't notice it tasting much better after sitting a few days?

I especially notice it with General Wintergreen. Get into the can before its ready, and I get kind of a strong "alcohol-y" taste and smell to it. Couple days later - perfect!

Thunder Frosted is just wacky if you dont thaw it a couple days - some strong wet portions, some weaker, dryer portions-very uneven. Couple day thaw - perfect! (Though lately this is assuming you got a proper can in the first place. )

Roda Lacket just tastes a little "off" if used right after thawing/right after quick thawing. Couple day thaw - perfect!

So now I just do it with all snus.

I never noticed tbh, but I'm not very patient. I'll let them stay in the fridge overnight if I have time, but sometimes I'm using them within an hour after removing from the freezer :^D

As I said in my post, generally not. Yes, absolutely for a few snus I have used. But what I use every day?? General White, Kronan, Grove White, and Nick and Johnny Black... No

I always take a can out of the freezer at night, and let it sit on the counter over night, and open it that morning.

Out of the freezer, and into my mouth. I don't that at all. I love the few seconds of coolness when I stick a portion in fro the freezer. And I notice no taste difference either.

I rotate many snus in and out of cold storage.

I keep a can of Grov White and N&J going almost all the time (occasionally substituting N&J w/ another sterk but at 1 or 2 a day the can lasts a while). Once those come out of the freezer they never go back in. I usually have two more cans going but after three or four days they go back into the freezer and I pull out a couple different ones. Repeat process. Lately one of the rotating cans has been los. They stay in the fridge when i'm at home and I usually bring Grov and another portion snus on the road unless there's an overnight then I bring a bunch.

I'll take a portion right out of the freezer and pop in in too. I guess I kinda thaw it out with my fingers as I massage it to get the consistency the way i like it.

I've noticed no difference in taste between in and out of the freezer/fridge, refreezing, yadda yadda yadda. I prefer a cold snus to a warm one though.

I've been known to pop a frozen portion. Usually it's in the fridge for a few hours, but never more than a day.

I don't pay any attention to thawing portion or lossnus. If I'm not going anywhere and the thought occurs, I'll put a new tin in the fridge for later, but otherwise I grab from the freezer and go.

Most of the time out of the freezer and into my mouth. Sometimes I shake the can a little to break up the ice on the edges or stick it in my pocket to thaw for a few minutes. Claq Qui tends to taste and look a bit better after thawing, but the white portions I have now(General Sterk, General White, and Grov White) are really good right out of the freezer.

                              +1

                              Except I'm using los.

Never noticed any flavor difference. However, I do feel that letting los thaw at a slower more constant rate (as in the fridge) keeps it moist for longer.
