It was a pretty good segment overall. They had some douchebags on there, but the most credible people were the ones that supported snus. The people opposing it seemed pretty naive.

You have some doctor talking about specific studies and statistics to cite why snus is safer than cigarettes. Then you have some hillbilly who starts everything with "I don't think..." and then goes on to make some claim about why snus is the devil.

The "switching from one addiction to another" argument has no substance. When a person switches from cigarettes to snus, they are not switching their addiction to a different drug, they are simply changing the method of delivery for nicotine.

Its common for ex-heroin addicts to become alcoholics, since they are replacing their previous addiction with a new one. Thus, "switching from one addiction to another" requires the drug user to switch to a completely different drug.

The segment was rather poor. They made it sounds as if snus was invented to help people stop smoking, when this is not the case, as if every person snusing used to be a smoker....

I never smoked in my life. Also it was bunched up with all the camel, orbs sticks and all kinds of crap.

One thing they are right about is the american tobacco companies don´t want people to quit smoking, they want everyone to be like the poster boy who still smokes a pack a day and uses 10 snuses.

They really are saying very clearly- " Tired of all the smoking bans?, thinking of quiting you´r beloved cigs?- Now you don´t have to. We made these cool gadgets to get you thrue those nasty hours you can´t smoke every day, until you can."

And that anti tobacco woman.... Ppl like this actually get payed to say what she said....

People might end up using snus and still smoke, so it´s even more dangerous. Even if people would still smoke, they would smoke less with snus= more healthy + no second hand smoke, that alone should be reason to promote it, atleast you don´t harm everyone around you.

        Whatever, crappy no research segment.

I didn't think it was as bad as it could have been. I'd have liked to have seen more reference to scientific papers showing how few health effects there are, and one of us would have made a good counterpoint to nicotine boy. I didn't care for the "gap filler" spin on it. While that may be a legitimate use for some people, I think most do pretty well quitting cigs entirely using snus.

I'll take what I can get.
It could have been a lot worse.
Atleast snus got some positive exposure.

I doubt that it would impress any anti-tobacco zealot but regarding the dual user the fact is that the dope would likely be smoking two packs a day instead of one if he wasn't using snus. Or probably zero as someone pointed out if he got hold of some Thunder but again pointing out such nuances to ATZs is unlikely to bear anything but sour fruit.

Jesus Christ! That first guy they showed, Justin... did you see his desk?! Some RJR Camel Snus (eww...), General Sterk Portions (yum...), looks like some Gotlandssnus, one other Swedish Snus I can't make out, some Marlboro snus (OMG... *dry heave*), some Winstons, and a pack of Marlboro Reds. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the posterboy of Nicotine addiction.

I am a pack and a half a day smoker (Or was. Cigarette free for a little over a week now thanks to Swedish Snus with very little cravings), but if I had all of the Snus in rotation that this guy does I'd OD off of it alone.

I'm a little afraid......I don't think I was ready for snus to "come out of the closet". feels a little strange, ya know?

I mean, it's. good thing, sorta.......but why, why did they use that smoker snussin freak, that's not ready to quit smoking :?

EDIT: thinking more about it this morning. I think
60 minutes gave it a very fair shake. I love that they interviewed a Dr., a guy that quit smoking with snus. talked about nicotine gum and "the patch". they really covered more than I expected.

The Swedish TV guy they interviewed, Martin Timell, used to be a poster boy for nicotine gum in the 90´s on swedish TV, I guess he failed with them.

I am completely and utterly astonished at the ignorance of that lady. Why would you give someone who is obviously a total ignoramus air time? Go on a diet bitch.
Never mind the loon guy - That amount of nicotine would kill me stone dead and I solely use Thunder Frosted. He can't possibly feel well.

I thought it was a lot more fair than what I was expecting them to do. Though I wonder how they found the dude who smokes and snusses while brushing his teeth, and probably also gargles with nic juice and shampoos his hair with Copenhagen and sprinkles snuff on his omlette.

EDIT: Hmmm. Anybody try snuff on a cheese omlette?
