If I had to hazard a guess, I would say it's relatively old. All the snus back in the day was loose, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you pack the tobacco you can prevent mudslides. Our snus using forefathers probably used a smaller portion of loose tobacco than we do (as do many modern Europeans), so baking a bit of tobacco wouldn't have been the arduous process it's become wherein people bake massive prillas and then complain when it breaks apart on them.

Seeing as how snus is almost 200 years old and portions have only existed for the last 30 or so years....

I would guess that it’s pretty early.

Man’s propensity is to fashion a ritual to accompany every delight (that ritual merges some necessary function with a routine that announces and anticipates the delight)-- think: sniffing brandy, packing a pipe, or carving a Thanksgiving turkey.

Anyway....all of this is just a fancy way of saying....................I have no idea ops:

I'd wager that every conceivable way to administer lossnus with one's hands has been employed since day one.

I would say that depended on the cut and how long you wanted to hold the prilla in your mouth. I can't imagine a pinch of Prima Fint lasting but a few minutes without handbaking.

Hipster trend. Knew nothing about handbaking and was never taught about handbaking until I came to this forum.

Well to put into perspective, when I first was using snus there wasn't a such thing as a white portion as far as my knowledge was concerned at the time. Portions and Los with not nearly the selection as opposed to today. The mere thought or putting loose tobacco into the palm of your hand, rolling it in a fashioned that closely resembles what the machines (icetool/prismaster) do and THEN putting it into your mouth was something that I or my co-workers who sent me regular packages never noticed/thought of/seen. Just a pinch against the inside corner and up it went. Guess at the time was far too messy, time consuming, and/or wasteful? Who knows.

I would guess - in a half assed way a very long time, though I doubt they were so anal about it being absolutely perfect until recently.

This is how most old school Swedes do it, like Liandri described:

I guess it depends on how you define "handbaking." The in-the-palm method seems like it could very likely be a new thing. It just seems like the line is kind of fuzzy.

I mean either way, you form a pinch of some kind...
