POLL: Did you learn about snus from the 60 Minutes story?

    Hi Everyone,

I'm just curious... I knew nothing about snus before the 60 Minutes story that aired last month. I'm not sure if the intent of that story was to vilify snus or to promote it or just to inform the general public about it. If it was meant to vilify snus, it certainly backfired with me! I ran right out to the 7-11 after the story aired the same night and bought two cans of Camel... (I dislike the stuff now that I found Swedish snus) I saw it as an opportunity to quit smoking after several unsuccessful attempts. I quit smoking 3 days after starting to use snus. The key word in the interview was "Harm Reduction", the concept of substituting a less harmful substance to kick a more life threatening habit. This does not just apply to tobacco. Marijuana has been used in harm reduction groups to help wean people off of more dangerous drugs such as heroin or cocaine for example...

Just wondering how many of you first learned of snus from that report.

Nope. Learned about it about a year ago from Camel snus. Found SnusOn, never looked back.

I didn't. I learned about snus from the US Camel version (mellow). I found the real stuff by doing a search on reviews for the US Camel's garbage.

A co-worker told me about Swedish snus and I didn't believe him, so I looked it up, found Northerner, and ordered a sample box.

I found out about snus because I saw Camel in the stores and wanted to know about it before I bought. A click or two later on the laptop and bazinga! A new world opened wide. I did end up buying a couple cans before my first order arrived but after it did I ended up giving most of the Camel away. It's overly sweet to my palate but the real kicker was that to me it was uselessly weak.

I got a spam from Marlboro about it.

So I googled it and found some guy named tropical bob who apparently is putting them into his vaporizer.

So, intrigued, I continued to look around and finally found the Swedish Match site and found a local vendor.

I guess that the vast majority of the active members here found Swedish snus long before. Maybe you should ask the question again in a year or two.

Strangely, what gave me the final impulse to try snus, after I had found it by coincidence and studied it a bit on the internet, was a total anti-snus-article by a Swiss anti-tobacco worker, who described snus as a fibreglass-filled, mouth cancer causing nicotine bomb with high addiction potential. The ideal cigarette-replacement, I thought, and it was.

I don't think that the CBS report was that bad.

              Cheers!

Yea, I had seen the Camel stuff. I even turned down about 50 free cans - there for awhile they were doing 1 for 1 (free snus with camel cigarette purchases) freebies at my local tobacco store.

But it was described by the clerk as something you did in addition to smoking - and I had enough bad habits.

I should have taken them for the tins though. Or looked into it much earlier.

Learned about it long before from a friend who gave me a can.

I bet it sent you, a seasoned dip user, to the can w/the shits

I laugh every time I think about the story I read from you.

Learned about it roughly 6 years ago while researching methods to quit smoking. I didn't try it right off the bat.

The timing was kind of funny... I had seen the Camel stuff (not calling it snus) for a while and finally decided to look it up and find out what it was. It was around the same time as the 60 minutes story, but I hadn't seen it. I did end up watching the video online, but that was after I had recieved my first order and started using snus.

What is snus? Is it some kind of smoking tobacco?

I learned about the camel when they were test marketing in Austin. I found a store that was selling it and made the drive up there to get some. Bought some frost and some spice. I liked it, but didn't like it enough to drive to Austin every time I wanted some. A little later when they started selling it here I started buying it every once in a while. I normally search for forums on just about anything I am interested in to find out what other people are saying. I Read the forums over here for a few months and finally ordered a sampler pack from buysnus. This was a little over a year and a half ago and I've been ordering consistently since then. Last order was 1 roll N&J, 1 roll N&J Black, 1 roll Claq Qui from buysnus, and 2 rolls of general white from getsnus with the free hat and snus cozy. Hoping this lasts me for a while.
