    Expiry dates - thoughts?

Just got a new roll of 01 in the post, and the expiry date is 21st Dec 2010.

Seems a little short to me. That's less than a month.

What are your thoughts? I want to contact Northerner, but just want to make sure I'm right in thinking this.

I don't have any other cans for reference.

I believe thats a "best by" date
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Yeah, but it still seems short considering I paid full price, and not from the short-dated/expired offers they do.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. The snus will be fine, perhaps not as good as fresh off the line, but good enough. Everything you buy in the store is of varying freshness. Sometimes you score the sweet oranges, other times they're dry and stringy. Just one of life's little irritations, and not worth worrying about.

            Snus doesn't expire... if frozen..

            It just loses its freshness...

It should be fine, but hit up Fredrik like he said. I'm sure he'll work it out with you.

I wouldn't sweat it - I have snus in my freezer that expired 6 months ago and it's still fine. What pisses me off is I bought a can of General Los at The Humidor and discovered it expired a month ago. Normally not a big deal but they charge $6.99 a can here.

I was just surprised is all. I wasn't really looking to make a big fuss, just wondering what dates other people have had on new snus (which I didn't really make clear in my original post!). It's gone straight in the freezer anyway, and I've dropped Fredrik a line.

                    Cheers.

I don't even look tbh. By the time I get to newly purchased snus, it's usually many months past expiration. I'll look at the date then, but I have no idea what it was when I bought it.

That's how I am too. I stick it right in the freezer. Honestly I forgot they even had dates lol

Yeah. Freeze it right away. Vacuum seal if you can, but otherwise a Zip-Loc and cold will do the trick. I don't think the best-buy dates really mean much. Sure there is some degradation, but having enough so that you have no worry of running out far outweighs this negligible amount.

I don't even check the best before dates any more. They are more or less meaningless (a marketing gag, introduced by Swedish Match, the only company that could afford to place refrigerators in every corner shop at some point in time - with the requirement to only stock SM-brands in there).

Snus does not really expire, it just gets a little dry and the flavourings fade a bit, when it's really old (meaning 3 months past the best before date and kept in the cellar(!) for half a year, yeah I've used such stuff, after I once had ordered too much snus as an 'over-enthusiastic' newbie) and even then the differences between a fresh can and an old one from the cellar were hardly noticeable.

I had best before dates between 4 weeks and 5 months in the future when I still regularly checked them. Today, looking at some of my cans in the fridge, that seems unchanged. It's certainly more the stock-keeping of the manufacturers than that of the vendors that determines the deadline till the best before date. A best before date 4 weeks in the future is no reason to worry (or to complain) IMHO.

                            Cheers!

                              question about expired snus

i bought some snus about 6 months ago, and for about 3 months, a lot of it sat in a refridgerator. then for another 3 months they sat out in room temperature. although they are still sealed an unopened can they still be used now? im sure by now they wont taste great, but are they unsafe to use? i have about 10 cans that are still unopened. dont want to just throw them away.

Snus is good for about ever. It may not taste it's best, but it doesn't grow more harmful with age. I'm using snus that expired in 2008. It's been frozen the whole time, but that's a long time. It tastes fine. Not quite as good as fresh, but good enough.
