    Ice Tool --plunger rattle

I know it is the o-ring that make the seal, but when closed plunger rattles on my new 3mm black stainless steel Ice Tool. On my regular 3mm Stainless Ice Tool the plunger rattle just a little bit. On the black one it about twice as much. I wonder if buysnus.com would exchange it for a standard stainless steel?

You cannot expect there not to be a rattle. The tool has to be CNC'd for one piece to fit inside the other. It is metal on metal. That will make a sound of metal on metal.

The question is whether the tool makes a nice pris or not.

My original 3ml stainless tool has a sound if i shake it (a rattle so to speak), but I also do not spend much time playing with it other than making a pris.

Maybe I am confused about what you are saying, but I would think that they will all have some form of a rattle.

Just for giggles, I just went and cleaned my 3ml and re-oiled it which increased the amount of plunger movement (increasing the rattle). Honestly, I don't think there is anything to be concerned about.

I was just supprised that it make such a rattle. My plain stainless steel 3mm Ice Tool has hardley any rattle. I weighted them both and the new Black one is about 2 grams less. It looks like the inner diameter of the shank is a hair bigger (with a thinner wall), which would account for the rattle. Probably a milling issue and not a functional problem. After all it is the O-ring that provides the seal.

It could also be that the CNC specs had to be adjusted to allow for the coloring process.

I am saying this under the assumption that it is somehow coated black (ie. powdercoated)? Is this the case?

Can you post a pic of the inner diameter of the two tools side by side?

^ You're probably right. 2 grams of steel would be about 80-90 microns shaved from the inside of the barrel (about 3-4 thou). A standard powdercoat is about 60-80 microns, so if that 2g is reasonably accurate then that would account for the bit of extra play in the plunger. Powder coating can be tough to control in terms of exact thickness, so better to err on the side of extra play rather than have half of them all come out stiff as bricks, I would think.

This is going to cause me to break out my powder scale. I did the weighing on an electronic postal scale. I will have to weight each piece separately. By the way there the black coating only goes up the inside about a 1/16" on the end and about 1/2" down the top.

Still the black Ice Tool is good for night time recon and sniper work. I wouldn't want to give away my position on the mall roof top when the blue helmets come through. Whoops I just did!

While the coffee was brewing, I do as usual a 6mg Wise. Just after my first 3 or 4 sips, I put in a Gotland pouch, WOW picked up a nice Nicoti-buzz!

              Data

On a quick check plungers are the same.

              Stainless Steel Ice Tool:
              Plunger weight /w o-ring: 34.43g
              Barrel weight: 18.05g
              OD: 0.4738”
              ID: 0.0432”

              Black Stainless Steel Ice Tool:
              Plunger weight /w o-ring: 33.85g
              Barrel weight: 17.49g
              OD: 0.4728”
              ID: 0.0409”

I think the rattle is due to the difference with the inside diameter.
The neck of the plungers are about the same.
