    The effects of freezing snus

Hi All, GREAT SITE!! I recently got a roll of Offroad Coffee Vanilla. I grabbed a tin and opened it because I was out of it from my stash. Anyway, this new batch was way moist and powerfull as hell. It was great. I threw the other nine cans in a freezer bag and then into the freezer. When I grabbed the next can out of the freezer [about 24 hours later] it had lost alot of the moisture and some of the kick. To me it is still good but the freezing seemed to really tone down the taste, moisture and kick. Has anyone else had this problem?

I think it may have just /appeared/ to lose flavor and kick. I bet if you let it get to room temperature it would have been the same as the first can in the roll. 24 hours is way to short of a time for snus to lose moisture when frozen.

I'm confused as well. None of the snus' I have frozen have suffered in any way. I'm going on 5 months for some of the snus now, and all is well.

Maybe snusing has kicked a few too many of my brain cells..........

I had just received a roll of it so it was manufactured all in one batch. Thats whats so confusing to me.

            Honestly,

Look at the best before date of any offroad product before freezing it. The last cranberry portions I ordered have a best before date of July 23, 2008. I have never had to freeze an offroad product and they are as tasty on day 90 as they were on day 1.

The date will read "Bast Fore (best before) Day, Month, Year"

            ie. Bast fore 23,7,08

Freezing a flavored snus CAN diminish some of the flavor properties in heavily flavored snus, but it should have no effect whatsoever on the nicotine from my experience.

Thanks. Yea these new tins have a several months before they expire. However, I have tried so many different snus' that, if I didn't like them they just went in the freezer. So, being in the habit of storeing them there, thats where I keep all my snus except the tin I'm currently useing. Its the refridgerator from now on for the short term, for the snus I actually comsume.

I have never frozen a single can until now. I wonder, why so many people here on the forum are that quick with freezing (even if they only have a short-time supply on hand, that can be consumed up to the best before day).

From my experience freezing always kills parts of the taste of any food product. The only reason, that frozen food from the supermarket sometimes tastes 'good', is that it is loaded with anti-frost-chemicals, taste enhancers, artificial flavors and so on. Natural food always suffers when frozen.

Apart from that, snus is already processed (ground, pasteurized, flavored, salted etc.) up to a point, where freezing shouldn't do too much damage and most other members say, that freezing never was a problem for them.

So, Premium Parrots, maybe that was just bad luck for you with a single brand that seemingly doesn't agree with freezing. Trust your tastebuds, maybe try the snus once again tomorrow, and if it's really gone bad then keep in the fridge next time. The fridge is where snus belongs anyway. Again, I really wonder who started the strange advice to freeze the snus, even if not needed.

                Cheers!

I probably have close to 160 tins of snus in my freezer. I don't think I can use that much before the expiration :^)

Thanks for the info. Call me PP please. Its not that it went bad. It still tastes fine but that first tin, before freezing, was unusually moist. We'll see how the other cans are.

That other certain type of leafy product tends to make everything more interesting. Maybe that had something to do with it?

                        Chainsnuser made a great post.

Anytime a food product is frozen, two things will happen. The product will lose moisture and the physical structure of it's cells will be impacted. Once something is frozen it will never be exactly the same again. The result of a freeze / thaw cycle is always going to be a drier product.

Whether or not Snus should be frozen really depends on how picky the consumer is about freshness and flavor and how sensitive the specific Snus type is to freezing. The end result may be found to be acceptable, but don't be surprised if it is not.
