    new user nauseated??

    Hello all -

Stumbled across this forum the other day and have been mesmerized with much of the info here. I am a 20+ year pack a day smoker and would like to transition away from the smokes to snus - awaiting my first shipment from buysnus.

Found the Triumph product today at the corner store and decided to try it while I wait. It's the red can, regular flavor. First few minutes were fine, kinda pleasurable, then it got juicy and kinda gross. (It was just parked under my upper lip - I was trying to ignore it) I really wanted to spit - ALOT - but hung in there for another 5 or so minutes. Couldn't take it anymore and got rid of it. 5 min later I actually vomited. The hell? Am I condemned to snus wussdom? Please tell me real Swedish snus are not like this. Thanks for any insight.

I got like that from a Camel portion when I was still very new to snus. I also felt half stoned when using the Camel at first, and they aren't particularly strong. This is coming from someone who's smoked the equivalent of 1+ packs per day of handrolled cigarettes for 20 years. I think it's due to the difference in nicotine delivery. I got used to it rather quickly, and don't have problems anymore, except for occasionally late at night for some reason. At night I seem to feel the nicotine more strongly.

My suggestion is to try keeping the portion high and dry, and eventually you should get used to the different form of nicotine. I now relish a portion when it's runny. Lots of awesome flavor in a nice big burst :^)

      You'll toughen up.

My first experience with Swedish snus was Phantom portion. It gave me a weird "heartburn" for a while. Have also had a few experiences with Skruf Stark that were pretty intense.

I recommend a gradual transition from cigs to snus. I eventually got to a point where cigarettes no longer appealed to me and I was strictly a snusser. That was soon after I got my first shipment from buysnus.

Welcome to the forum and to the world of snus!

It seems to be something different with different people. Some are very sensitive to the nicotine delivery in snus despite being heavy smokers, some who are light smokers seem to deal with snus without a hiccough. I didn't vomit with my first snus, but it certainly took me aback with the wallop it delivered - so lightheaded and dizzy!

Cigarettes give you a huge blast of nicotine very quickly, but it also subsides quite quickly as well. Snus takes a few minutes to build to its full delivery capacity and then continues to pump out nicotine for a good while. The result is more of a nicotine crescendo than than a quick hit. The nice thing is that you have a lot of control when it comes to regulating the delivery - it's easy to leave the snus in for a few minutes and then simply take it out when you feel it starting to get ahead of you. The good news is that, with such a strong reaction to the snus, you'll probably find it quite easy to quit the cigarettes as you'll easily be able to get as much nicotine as you could possibly crave from snus with headroom to spare. You may even consider trying a tin of mini portions to see how well they work for you.

At any rate, tread carefully at first and enjoy the foray into the new world of snus. Best of luck trying to kick the cigarettes too - you'll probably find it to be easier than you ever dreamed was possible.

I first started with American 'snus' products and I felt the same way. Take my word, Swedish stuff is heavenly. At first you will fixate on the 'salty' flavor... but the longer you go without smoking the more you will be able to taste. After a while you won't even mind the salt because you can taste so much more. I smoked a pack to 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day for 8 years and even after 3 weeks of being off the cigarettes I feel so much better. Many people here have given up cigarettes in lieu of snus, and if you have any hard times kicking the cig habit feel free to post about it. If only I knew about snus when I first started smoking!

Welcome, and when your order comes you will adjust fairly quickly. Make sure you place your portion just a tad bit either left or right from the gap between your two front teeth. Others may have better placement advise, but this is my optimal placement for both long lasting flavor as well as minimal 'juicing'.

          Cheers!

Oh do I empathize. I barfed last week after I mixed smoking my pipe with a Wise 6mg portion. Lord did the world go crazy ...

Despite what might appear the case, there are no "rules" you must follow. When you're starting, feel free to spit out the snus within 10 minutes. Blasphemy, hell. It's the smart thing to do. If you don't think spit-tobacco juice is just delicious, get rid of the snus at first hint of "running."

And never go "up" in nicotine level. No "strong" portions. Indeed, strive for the smallest amount of nicotine that keeps you comfortable. I've been moving down, down to small, dry snus at 3mg. It's working. (But I will never give up my pipe a few times each day!).

You will adjust to snus' nicotine delivery. You'll come to like it, in the way Zero stated. Better than cigarettes? Never for this ex-smoker of 30-a-day. But it is enjoyable and it is far safer than inhaling cigarettes. Good luck.

              ^^^Good advice^^^

I've found that the strong ones just aren't for me, and I don't really mind at all. I also notice that I don't keep a portion or pris in for nearly as long as I used to, either.

Wait until you need a cig and then have a snus instead, that way you will have a little bit of a nicotene defecit and it may not hit you as hard.
Try it on a full stomach, this should help feelings of nausea. In addition, you might want to drink something sweet with it. That will prevent a blood sugar drop that is most of the cause of nicotene sickness.
If you have been, dont play with the portion too much, that way you get the dose slower. Welcome to the forums and congratulations on choosing a much healthier alternative

Btw, I'm in lakewood OH and started with triumph myself, its ok snus, but the stuff made for the swedish market is better imo, not to mention cheaper.

From a 20 year American snuff user- listen up! At first- don't worry about following the Swedish ettique of not spitting. If you feel the need to spit, then by all means- SPIT. And spit frequently. After you become used to snus, the urge will go away and/or if it doesn't you will be able to swalow without consequence.

The thing I'm learning is snus almost "punishes" you for not taking care of yourself, at least to the new user.

Don't eat (and something quality) and nausea is sure to set in.

Don't brush your teeth at least once a day and it's like someone s*it in your mouth (even more so if you happen to fall asleep with a portion in your mouth!).

I think that may be a good thing. It can force us to do the things we ought to do but usually neglect?

Yeah, I've been taking better care of my teeth since giving up smoke and switching to snus, gargling regularly with Listerine, etc. But sometimes I have to force myself to eat. It seems that I could just live on snus and coffee with cream.

Well I've found that if I don't eat breakfast a snus + coffee in the morning will leave my stomach feeling not all that great. Having a small child to get ready to get out the door every morning means that I used to skip breakfast quite often.

Since I started snusing two weeks ago I've been eating breakfast a lot more regularly and probably because of that my energy and focus throughout the day have been much improved.
