Any tips on getting lossnus from portions?

I've grown sick of the paper in portions but still want to enjoy all my portion only flavors. When I open up a portion most of the time the tobacco feels on the drier side (compared to los) and doesn't want to stick together at all, even the moister varieties give similar problems. I usually add a few drops of water which does help somewhat but it still isn't quite right.

I noticed that the tobacco in ettan portions seems different from the los, and gotlands portions are the worst, idk whats in the gul portions, but its not the same stuff thats in the gul los cans, same goes for the julesnus.

Is it even possible to get a true lossnus equivalent by gutting portions?

There are different ingrediants in portions and loose.
Loose has added properties to help it stay moist and pliable, and to help it stay together.
The moisture content on loose is higher as well.
Although you might have the same type of snus in loose and portion... it's not the same snus, honestly they don't even taste the same hardly.

There are vegetable fibers added to portions as well as ingredients to increase the PH. Thats why they say 24 grams of "snus" not tobacco. I'm sure loose has additives as well but as you have already noticed they are not the same. I will keep an eye on this thread since I to would love for some of the portion only snus to be loose but I sure as hell havent figured out how to make it work. Good Luck.

I think propylene glycol is the magic ingredient in lossnus. You should be able to get that from the drugstore. Add a little of that, and a little water until the consistency is right. Kind of an expensive way of getting lossnus though.

Thats a good idea lx! I am going to experiment with this in the future, I will have to check the local drug stores and see what it is going for, there is a guy on ebay selling it pretty cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/Propylene-Glycol...ht_1247wt_1139

That would be great if I could perfect a formula to get a real lossnus from portions, figure two cans of portions would equal 48g of los, if the portions are 1g each. Its not very economical but if you can get a perfect los from portion only flavors, that would be sweet!

Just got an idea. Would it be possible to use the propylene glycol/distilled water premixed solution that is sold for cigar humidifiers, I have plenty of it on hand. I may give it a try later on, I just don't want to end up getting poisoned of something.

I expect it would work ok. Use a very small amount, at least at first. The pg makes the snus stickier so it's easier to handle. It isn't even essential, but it makes it easier to work with.

Don't forget to add a bit of fiberglass for texture.

A better idea would be to buy lossnus if that's what you want.

The point of the thread and the experiments is to get los or los equivalent from portion only snus.

If there was a los version made of every snus I enjoy then I would have already purchased them and wouldn't need this thread. Go to any online snus store and compare the selection of lossnus to portion snus, the choices are somewhat restricted for those of us who prefer to use los.

I'm curious. What portions are you particularly interested in?

What originally got me thinking of gutting portions was when I had a craving for gotlands 2010 julesnus but only had the portions, and all the estores where already sold out for the year.

I'd like to make los versions of: Gotlands flader, Gotlands 2010 julesnus portions, Click, general silver, Offroad cranberry (los version was discontinued) Offroad eucalyptus, Offroad coola, thunder coola, skruf OP, skruf tranbar, tre ankare and I'm sure their are others. Now I know some of those are white portions and are going to be alot more difficult to work with.

I'd also love to be able to turn the not-so-great gotlands gul portions into the heavenly delicious gul lossnus.

I could do an entire cans worth or just a portion or two at a time, which ever i find to work best, if anything works at all.

I am dying to try the flader los samples coming out!!!!

I was wondering cause I found I like mint snus better as a portion. For the longest time I wanted a mint lös, and when I finally got Offroad Frosted, I decided I prefer it portioned :^D I think it's because I can treat it more like a mint candy, but I don't know. I don't use mint, or portions much, but they go together for my tastes.

Losing Gotland was painful. I like the portions, and the lös for different reasons. The portions seem to accentuate the evergreen notes, while the lös favors the citrus. Forced to give up one, it would be the portions, but I really liked having the both. Course it's a moot point now. Once my stash is gone, I won't have either :'^(

great thread.. i tell you how it is!

The portions has a differnt fraction to it then loose! loose snus is much more fine grinded tobacco.
if you want to try it any way i would do it as following, (do not add more E1520 since it is only for mold/moisture content)

E422 Glycerol is the way to go! Portionssnus does not contain E422 since it is only acts as a binder in Loose snus. about (5-10%)
I would also add approx 10% Tap water to reach the higher moisture in Loose snus.

But anyway you would get problem baking it becoulse of the fraction in Portion snus
                            /Jimi

                              Thanks for the correction Jimmy!

You know we wouldn't have to do this if you'd make more los(and bring back the Gul) ;^)
