How would you Tackle 50 cans of Snus if you were new to Snusing?

    Hi SnusOn!

I ordered 4 cans of snus which arrived four days ago. The shipping charges killed me. Realizing that in order to get my money's worth, I need to order in massive quantities to offset shipping. However, I am a brand new snusser. I've been using Camel Snus for the last 2-3 weeks and just started Swedish snus four days ago. In order to determine which types and brands of Swedish snus I like, I decided to order 50 cans!

I must admit, this is perhaps the best Idea I have had all month.

Here is my goal: identify my 2-5 favorite snus's out of those 50, so that on my next order I can order 50 cans of just those 2-5 types.

There are multiple ways to approach this:
    • I can open 1 can at a time, and kill it over the course of x days.
    • I can open 4-5 cans at a time, and rotate through them over the course of x*5 days.
    • I can open 50 cans at once, and rotate through them over the course of x*50 days.

I am under the impression that for a noob snusser like myself, it might take a while to understand the flavors, "just like wine."

Would you help me identify the best way to accomplish my goal?

    Thank you !

    --lost American Snusser Convert

Edit: another goal would be to not destroy the snus, so if opening 50 cans of snus and rotating through them would be bad for the flavor, or whatever, than I would want to avoid that obviously.

Ahh Yes, the best way to accomplish your goal. Let me think a bit.....OK I have the perfect solution for you mate!

    First off....welcome to the site.

Second, just go ahead and buy as much snus as you can.

Third, send it all to me and I gladly give you my opinion of each tin.

See? That was easy now wasn't it.

    works for me.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Ok, and how would you go about determining your opinion if you were brand new to Swedish Snus and comming off a bender of Camel?

Test the cans 1 at a time, 5 at a time with rotation on each portion, 50 at a time with rotation on each portion, or something else?

I really wouldn't worry about it. Just enjoy it. Remember your taste may also change over time.

That is interesting about the taste changing over time: I noticed that the first Gotenburg Rape I had, with a Tanqueray & Tonic (recommended on Snus) was great, while the second I had with no alcohol was displeasing, and then the third I had with no alcohol was good.

What I would really like to do is open all 50 and rotate them one by one, writing down on a paper which I think is good, but I am worried that they might loose their taste or something. Would you say that is unfounded?

What variety of Camel snus is your favorite? If you enjoyed Robust, the majority of traditional snus flavors will be up your alley (Grov, Ettan, General, etc.). If you favor Winterchill or Frosted, I'd recommend anything mint or wintergreen flavored.

When I first started using snus, I went straight for the traditional varieties (Skruf and Nick & Johnny). I like salty food and coffee, so I loved the flavor of snus immediately.

Shipping wasn't as big a problem when I started, but what I did was buy a roll of a favorite, and a few singles to try. If I liked those singles, they were made a roll order in the future, and new singles were ordered. Writing stuff down is too much like work. Also, you can like everything about a snus, but still not want to use it. When you grab a snus from the fridge, and you tend to grab one repeatedly, that's the one you want to get rolls of. I always have several open. They stay in the fridge, and long term storage goes in the freezer.

I have never purchased a non-menthol cigarette, so I went for Frost originally for 2-3 days, and then moved to Winterchill because I assumed the larger portions had more nicotine. I have tried Robust, but I would say that my favorite taste was frost, then Winterchill, and then Robust. Right now I have four cans of Sweedish snus: General Mint, General white strong, General white long, and Gottensburg Rape. Currently I like the mint the best; I assume that is my proclivity towards menthol.

In my current order, I have a variety of mint and wintergreen flavors coming.

That is a good idea, thanks.

To answer your question, I would advise against opening fifty cans of snus lol. Yeah they will dry out. Go with your five. can plan. If one is unbearable after a few stabs at it, toss it in the freezer and open a new one. Welcome to the site and to snus.

I am relatively new to snusing, and as such went through what you're going through not so long ago. My recommendation: make a spreadsheet. Give each snus a chance of at least one or two cans. Don't throw any out unless you absolutely hate it.

Examples: I loved General mint at first, and so ordered a roll, but my tastes changed enough that by the end of the roll, I was disliking it. Similarly, I found General OP disgusting at first, but by the end of the 3rd can I "got" what the manufacturer was going for in terms of flavor. It is still not a favorite, but it will do in a pinch.

I have a mini-fridge under my desk, and I generally keep about 7-10 cans open at once. I like WP, so drying out isn't really an issue. Soon enough you'll figure out what your favorites are: what you find yourself wishing you had in your mouth during the day. For me, Ettan White, Ettan los, and Brandy Alexander los are hard to beat.

first off, be as sure as you can that you like a brand before you order a whole roll. I can't tell you how many times I had nine cans of snus I didn't want.

open one of each, cut the top off a baggie, dump the snus in the bag, twist the top and put bag and all back in each can. That's what I do and none hardly dries out unless I hate it. I've been doing that for years with from two to ten cans at a time.

Like someone else said you taste will probably change as you go. So if you do find yourself with a brand you hate freeze it and try it again in a few months. The types I started out liking now I can't stand. As things go in a few years I may end up back to them.

Dump the snus out of the tin and into a bag, seal the bag, and place the bag back into the tin?

Sounds like a solid plan to me. I've never bothered with that, but I've also never thought of it.

My tastes can change with snus very rapidly. One minute, I will just love a snus and keep using it, but after a few cans, I might slow down. Either way, there are not many brands that I flat out can't use. So don't worry about getting some that you won't like because you probably won't find many varieties that you can't stand. You should not open all 50 at once though. They will dry out. You really need to finish the can to accurately determine how you feel about a specific variety. I have only ever thrown out one can of snus because the taste was so bad to me (Thunder Wintergreen, yuck!) .

I think you got questionable advice above. Mint snus is alright, but I've only ever used it sparingly. You should try more of the tobacco flavors. I mean really you already have an idea of what other mint snus will be like anyway. Camel's "Robust" is probably the worst, most awful flavor ever. It is not a reliable indicator of whether you will like tobacco flavored snus at all. When I first tasted the bergamot and tobacco mix of my first General portion, I loved it. As an American, I hadn't tasted bergamot and I didn't realize that oral tobacco could actually taste good.
