Rule of thumb: If you don't plan on using the snus before it's expiration date, store it in the freezer. I would also recommend storing the cans in a freezer bag. Snus will be fine in the refrigerator up to the expiration date.

      ^ This

The only time i have ever had snus dry out is if it's an open can that i haven't touched in a while. This is generally due to having too many open at one time.

Is the expiration date really written in stone? I mean does it turn to dust or go rancid? Or does it just lose some punch and the nic hit goes away and maybe a slight flavor loss?

nic isn't lost at all. flavor loss. kinda just like it's drier. I know that sounds stupid, but it's like things that taste differently in different temperatures. Snus is like that with moisture.

There was a thread about mold in snus but that's an isolated case I think. It just looses moisture and this it's flavor mojo. You can rehydrate it wicked easily so it isn't a problem. only add like 1 or 2 ml at a time though, cos it's easy to go over and you've got to wait for a couple three days for it to really distribute in the can. I've had snus over a year past the date that was still very good. After all, aged tobacco isn't usually a bad thing. It's just leaf, water, and salt pretty much. Technically the Ph changes over time I think and there are more TSNAs if it's not kept cool enough but whatevah. Freezer eliminates that. I have a s-ton of snus in the freezer. I like to go down to the big freezer in the cellar and just look at it all sometimes.

If your snus loses its flavor
            In the fridge over time
            A little added extract
Will bring it back to a better wetter life

(I know it doesn't rhyme but I'm no Lonnie Donegan!!)

                +1

I have a sort of rotation set up by shelf in my refrigerator. Being a bachelor, I have no issues in doing this. Once the 'hot' shelf gets close to the "Use by date", I purge them into the freezer in ziplock freezer bags thus far. Hope I don't end up with freezer burnt snus as I'm a bit lazy in getting around to purchasing a vacuum sealer.

Damnit LaZ, there's gotta be at least a Walmart close by!
I've seen this Starter Kit for well under $20...

                  "Removes air for freezer-burn protection.

With the Ziploc® Brand Vacuum Freezer System, you can protect your
                  snus against freezer burn
, which means less waste. The Starter Kit
includes specially designed vacuum bags and a simple, battery-free,
                  air removal pump.
The bags have a special one-way valve that allows
air in the bags to be removed. They're great for freezing snus, snuff,
                  dip and more.
Starter Kit includes one Vacuum Sealer Pump and three
                  quart-size Vacuum Freezer Bags."

NO BATTERIES NEEDED and, as you can see, it fits your hand nicely!!

I have those vacuum freezer bags. They work well but do lose their vacuum after a few weeks. In any case, I keep mine all frozen, when it's time to use it I take a can or two out (like to rotate between 3 cans weekly) and the next morning they are fresh as the day I bought them.

I use the Ziploc freezer bags now almost exclusively

                      BUT

I already had a FoodSaver Freshsaver Handheld Vacuum Sealing System so the ZipLoc Pump has been relegated to the rear of a cupboard (just in case of an emergency!).

The zipper bags that FreshSaver makes are refrigerator bags as opposed to the ZipLoc freezer bags.

The FreshSaver Pump works like a charm on the ZipLoc bags and, after sealing mucho bags of snus (30+), I've only had a couple failures; somehow little pinpricks had developed. At around $20, this was/is a good investment! AND, believe it or not, it's great for freezing FOODS or storing keepsakes!! AND I use them to "marinate" snus with numerous extracts...

Do yourself a favor (yeah, you) -- get the FreshSaver Sealing System + some Quart and Gallon ZipLoc Freezer Bags... you won't regret it (especially with today's economy being in disarray)!

                      A worthwhile investment indeed!!

Too bad I can't get paid for this!!

The real ? is: Can you do anything else with the FreshSaver Sealing System ?

Eh I am just messing around. Having been in sales all my life my mind naturally sees the salesman in everyone.

Just out of curiosity... whats the difference? Does the Freshsaver have a motorized pump or something vs the Ziploc manual?
