    Snus recipes

So this weekend I wanna give making my own lös a try, and I looked up some recipes. Unfortunately, every link lead to one of like three videos that I've seen (a couple of which are on here) that are basically useless to me. So, anybody got a good recipe?

Here's a guide I wrote ... It's a recipe of sorts, with lots of extra explanations of the processes. You can also see lots of my more specific recipes in the "grow and make your own" section of this forum.

I've seen that one. I'll hafta download a unit converter for it though. Have you used rolling tobacco with that one? Because that's what I can get cheapest and I can dry it out fast. Time is a constraint for me, since I work 50 hours a week and the weekend is all I get.

You've got to be careful with tobacco designed to be smoked, 99% of commercial stuff is full of chemical additives and flavour enhancers - even the roll your own stuff!

My advice would be to try to get the stuff made by Natural American Spirit if you plan to go down that route. However, it will be far more expensive to use rolling tobacco than to order a lb of leaf from wholeleaftobacco.com - if your in the USA that should be very easy to do.

It does take some time, like anything you make yourself, especially the drying and grinding. But once you've got the equipment and a stock of snus flour then you can just set it and leave it!

        Best of luck!

Actually, I can get pure tobacco at my local shop for half the price of that site. And thanks.

            Hello silverfire

I have posted a recipe on making Swedish snus on my blog. My plan is to do a video also, but I'm waiting on my new computer, my old one just crashing when I try to edit the video. I have noticed that many here buy their snus from Sweden, but you can buy tobacco flour for making your own snus here as well. I think some of them ship it abroad to.

I hope this can be of some help: http://creatinker.com/swedish-snus/

About how much usable tobacco flour comes from a pound of whole leaf? Say a pound of flue cured virginia? (Or a kilo, the ratio should be the same)

Our friends at Google helped me:

"From this, many different techniques for curing tobacco have been developed. ... Your tobacco leaves are about 90% moisture, so while each plant can give you 1 kilo (2 pounds) of tobacco leaves , the dried weight is only about 100 grams."

There's a lot of leaves in one kilo of tobacco. I'm amazed that the price is only around 300 SEK (~ $35 USD) for one kilo. From that I get 2.5 kilo snus.

IDK if google has any friends... they treat people as the product rather then a customer.

                  anyway cool.

Ive got the sodium carbonate and bonzoate or what ever their called, just need a few more bits, oh and the tobacco then ill give it a go.

Hmm.... I might just buy the flour then. Also, once your snus is done cooking, do you refrigerate or freeze it, or can it be stored unrefrigerated? I prefer my general at room temperature to get more of the flavor, so I wanted to make sure that was safe to do with the home-cooked as well.

                    Thanks BB!

Once you've finished the cook - the snus will need to mature if it is to taste good (although sometimes you can use it straight away). The safest way to do this is to leave it in the refrigerator with the lid slightly open to get rid of any more ammonia gas produced. 2 weeks is normally how long it takes to become delicious. Once you've done that then you can treat the snus just like any commercial stuff.

I store what I use in three to four weeks in the refrigerator and the rest in the freezer. Then you just scoop out and bring with you what you need during the day. It don't take many minutes for the snus to take on the room temperature. Snus direct from the refrigerator can be a bit cord to the gum. I guess you can store it in room temperature, but then I would add preservative, something you don't really need if you store it in the freezer.

My experience is that the last box in a batch you take out from the freezer is the one with the best taste. It matures even if it's frozen.
