Spongy Snus?

Hi All,

First post here. I've been snusing for a couple of months now, having stopped a 2-3 cigar per day habit, and I love it. I am currently a big fan of Grov, Ettan, General and Gotegurg Rapee (intentional misspelling, as I don't have an inflected "e"). Anyway, I recently got a few rolls of portion snus from snuscentral, put them in a freezer bag and into the freezer and have been taking out a couple of cans at a time. Everything seemed fine, but over the past two days, with some cans that have been out max three days and always in the fridge unless being used, I have noticed that the portions seem to feel "spongy" in my mouth. It's hard to describe, but it's like the snus isn't a dense mass, and I can suck air through it if I try. The portions are nice and moist, the flavor seems fine, if a bit shorter lived, but it feels weird. I usually fluff the portions a bit before popping them in, and they settle down into a nice, firm lump against my gum, but something feels off now. It's almost like the paper outside feels thicker than normal and the snus is a spongy mass beneath.

Anyway (if this makes any sense) has anyone experienced this? Is my mouth going through a phase? Is it the freezing? I have had some cold/sinus problems of late, but can't really think of anything else that it could be.

What brand portions did you get, because thunder does chew bags with courser cut tobacco or it could be denser bags.

I think your guesses are good ones. Having a cold can make a huge difference to how snus tastes and the whole experience changes because you generally salivate more when you're ill.

My first thought was that you were describing old dried out portions ... But freezing can have the same effect. Unless completely vacuum sealed, snus gets freezer burnt very easily and never tastes as good as fresh and it can severely change the texture too. I only freeze my emergency rations finding snus stays good for a month in the fridge or even for several weeks at room temperature (i leave it in my car at this time of year!)

Thanks for the reply. I am considering a vacuum sealer, as I can't see my lazy self ordering a new batch every month. I would make several 2-3 can sealed packs and take them out as needed.

I am hoping it's my cold/sinus infection affecting what I have now, as I don't want all that yummy snus to be ruined...

So, it appears it was the freezing. It seems the Grov held up ok, but the others (Goteburg and General) are trashed. Oh, well, live and learn. I lost some snus, but it still beats a several thousand dollar a year cigar habit.

Vacuum sealer and a new shipment of snus on the way!

It will pay in the end ... a good thing to have. Freezer burnt snus is not the worst thing in the world - but it definitely is different. Even vacuum sealed frozen snus is a bit less brilliant than fresh. But it's always good to have a stash as you can be left hanging if a delivery messes up.

Yeah, it's not completely ruined, it's texture is just off. I'm going to keep it for a rainy day. Thanks again for your help.

I never put a can back in the fridge once opened, I find it dries out quicker. I also find snus tastes better when at room temperature, and a can that is out of the freezer or fridge improves in flavour after a day out.

Hmmm...I'm going to give this a try. I just got an icetool slim can and will crack open a can of General and see how it goes sans fridge over a few days. Thanks for the tip!

Snus should be in room temperatur Before use, but stored a Little bit colder.

If a can is dry, try to put a little bit of boiled coffe into it or a potatoe peel.

That sounds really good, can't wait to try it! Maybe just a drop or two on my white portions......
