Lol. I just happened to have a tin of Lucky Strike Whites next to me when I read that post. I didn't have too many portions of it left so I consolidated the portions with the near finished Retro Whites and tested out the water tightness of the LS tin. It'll float just fine, but when submerged it'll leak water into the tin. If kept submerged for a minute you'll definitely have some soaked portions. And that's if the lid is kept on tightly. Definitely a no-go.
Cool thanks... again. I really think I have decided on the small otter box the 1000 series suggested by pony. It is a little bigger than I originally wanted but should work out plus I found it online for $5.80

Yes, i went for the first time last year... and I was "ejected from the raft" by a VERY small rock in the first 100ft of the voyage! I was like WTF!!!

But had a great time other than the 1st 5min

The best part of you being ejected by that very small ripple in the water was the look on your face, it was priceless. You could tell that all that was going through your mind was "Are you kidding me, already I'm falling out of this raft. This is gonna be a long ride". I'll never forget that look. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it.

Why don't you just test out how waterproof certain cans are?

Take empty cans of snus and submerge it in some water for X amount of time.

Maybe put some tissue in the can, so you can tell how much water gets there...

Most cans will float, like Lucky Strike cans. Problem is if they stay submerged they'll start leaking and will have enough water in them to soak the snus after a minute. Not something you want to risk when rafting and the possibility of being tossed in is decent. How long does it take to turn over a canoe or kayak and get back in? Didn't take too long last I remember, but it's long enough to get the snus pretty wet.

I ran a small test with a can of Lucky Strike White and Ettan Original. I kept them both submerged and moved them around slightly in my sink. Here's the results.

Note, however, that's only slight movement. Can't guarantee it'll be that much with a lot of movement, like if you were treading water.

FRANKEN-CAN, i tried a little mix and match on some cans the, best combo I found was an offroad apple can and a general wintergreen lid, it seemed to keep the water out even during agitation, I don't really know if I would want to trust my snus in there on the river though, so I ended up ordering the Otterbox 1000, should be here by wed. next week.

Sweet, mate, nice to see you found an Otterbox on the cheap. I wouldn't trust a snus can in a river either. It's one thing to have some light controlled agitation; it's another to be in a river treading water with it in your pocket. The Otterbox would probably keep snus outside a fridge fresher too.

The family goes canoeing in the BWCA every year. While not the same as whitewater rafting, there's still a bunch of stuff I keep in watertight containers...

There's a ton of different bags/boxes for canoeing/kayaking/rafting you can get. Just google "drybag" and you'll find thousands.

I have a variety of drybags, boxes for electronics (GPS, ipod, cellphone, etc.). All of them work well. I bring smokes and snus. Never had any issues. Cigs either need to be in a box (crushproof) or sometimes I bring loose tobacco and papers and roll them. Then no worry about crushing.

Or you could go the inexpensive route and just put your tins in ziplock bags. Those also work. We always bring extra ziplock type bags on canoe trips - all sizes. They come in really handy.

Umm i was curious why no one mentioned the easiest/cheapest solution. A ziplock bag (or some cheap bag like it that will keep out water). If you have it in a bag I am sure it will be fine. It would take a lot of water in the bag to ruin the snus. Just a cheap suggestion. If I was in your situation thats what I would do. GL

ZipLocs are amazingly non-water tight in a river situation. I don't know how it happens, but water inevitably gets inside, and gets your stuff wet. Not as big a deal with snus tins, but cigarettes get too wet to use after a dunking.

lxskllr is completelly right. Last year all of our cigs were soaked halfway through the rafting trip and they were all in ziplocks.

Thought you settled on getting the Otterbox. Still looking or already pulled the trigger?
