How long should snus be kept in the mouth?

    Another newbie question! ops:

I found that as I have been using snus, I've had a tendency to keep the portion snus in for longer & longer. Is there an optimal time that one should keep it in the mouth? Is there a difference in this time for loose vs portion snus?

Well a portion can be left in for as long as you like. If you are not craving another, and there is still taste left, keep using it. Loose tends to break up after around an hour or so depending on the brand.

I once got so entranced playing Command&Conquer non-stop that I only realized I still had a pris in after my lip started to ache pretty bad.
        Must've been about 5 hours.

But yeah, keep it in as long as you want.

Wow! I think I went two hours with a mini portion. Did any of you find, when first using snus, that you got headaches? Could be just a coincidence with me (more work = less sleep) but I wondered...

No headaches for me. Actually I find that snus sometimes eliminate any trace of headaches. A typical thing is supposed to be hiccups ... only got that once myself (from very early morning snus), but have an uncle who got it every time he tried snus as a young man.

Never got that. I too think, snus is rather a pain killer, than a headache-causer, but someone with more medical knowledge could, of course, say more.

The nicotine might give a person a headache if they were not used to it. Seems like I can remember a few times using too much strong snus and getting a headache. Could have been just chance i got the headache so i am not sure it was the nicotine. Just an idea.......

I know nicotine constricts blood vessels. This can probably give you a headache if you have too much. But nicotine withdrawal is also known to cause headaches so it could work either way

Darned if you do, darned if you don't! I think it was lack of sleep! I only use about 2-3 mini portions a day, so I would think that is on the light end of usage!

I snus with portions about 3-4 times a day. One after every meal really.
I keep them in for about 3-4 hours on average and replace it when it's gone "flat"

                        agreed!

I've found that the ones without artificial sweeteners can last me up to 5-6 hours sometimes. The ones with fake sugary taste don't make it past an hour at most.. my gums seems to "reject" them and they start to taste bad.. I've even gotten a weird "bump" from snusing on Camel for too long. (it went away the next day)

Once I fell asleep with a ONYX in my upper lip.. it turned my inner skin/gum into a raisin and looked gross.. I figure its from all the salt! After a couple days it went back to normal.

I think untill the snus fluid starts to flow.
Snus fluid is so distasteful. :x

                            That's exactly it.
Once my tongue can't keep up with the sagging pris of loose and the juices overwhelm me, it's out!
When I started to snus this was at about 15 minutes. These days it's anywhere from 30min. to 5 hours.

I just had a thought. I've been seriously considering quitting snus, mainly because I have noticed apparant gum recession on my top teeth since I have used snus, for about a year.

I am now thinking, that this may have been different, if I had not kept the portions in for so long. I never considered the 2 aspects. I have always kept a portion in over an hour, usually an hour and a half. I know I am not alone in doing this, as the consideration of how long has always been debateable, left to personal preference. I always kept them in that long, because for me, the flavor kept. Those who say they keep them in shorter periods of time, say, usually, that the nic is absorbed, so no reason to keep it. I've always just went by flavor preservation.

But, now I am thinking, the length of time I kept portions in, may have been the main factor of my snus-related gum recession. I know I can't go back in time, but I am thinking if I had kept the portions in for like 15-30 mins, my gums may not be as affected now.

So, this is a gum health, and a nubie topic for consideration. I think it may be better for your gums to keep a portion in 15-30 mins, instead on over an hour at a time.

This is just my new opinion based on my experience, others will have their own.
