    Keeping it Wet

I like to carry a few cans with me at all times. I have something strong, something min, and something sweet. Just have to be prepared, eh? However, this means I can be carrying a can in my pack for several days. Sometimes, they can get very very dry.

I know it would help to keep them in the fridge at night, and I usually fall asleep thinking that very thought ;-) I never actually get up and put them there, though.

I tried putting a bit of apple in the can - read that somewhere - but then I had a bunch of soggy, smelly snus that tasted like old apples. I wasn't able to think of anything else that would do the trick that didn't have some taste of its own. And there was no real control over HOW moiste things got.

    So, here's my current experiment:

One day, at the drug store, I saw a box of those super-chamois-substitutes: Sham-Wow. Great product, works like advertized. Worth the 20 bucks for a box of many. So many that I have several that haven't ever been used. They come in two types in the box. One is thick and orange, the other is thin and blue.

What I've done, with a few cans, is cut off a bit of the blue, thin sham-wow and toss it in the can with a few drops of water on it. It has no taste (I'd probably wash it once before doing this) and it holds the water away from the snus really well. It seems to do the trick.

So far, I've found that you can overwater, and the snuss gets a bit wetter than a white portion should be, but I don't think it actually hurts anything, and I can just take the scrap out and put it in the container lid for safe-keeping while the snus dries out a bit. The whole process may take more pactice, but it looks like a winner.

Next step, I think, will be to buy a bunch of those little tiny zip-lock bags - about 1/2 inch square - poke pinholes in them, and put a bit of sham-wow in each. That may help regulate the amount and rate of moisture release. It also would keep the tobacco from staining them.

Does anyone already have something handy to keep snus from drying out - even when abused and kept in a pack for several days?

Are you talking about whites?? They will never dry out. But even regular portions, just never seems to be a big issue for me. Sure, maybe a tad dry, but I simply don't notice. I long ago stopped putting my open portions that I am using on a regular basis back in the fridge. They re out for 3 - 4 days and I haven't noticed much degradation. Portions I use one or two a day are kept in the fridge.

Some brands are more prone to drying out than others. I have a particular problem with mini whites - the worst being the Mocca pommegranite. I figure the fruit (or whatever) absorbs some of the moisture from the tobacco over time. But most of my white minis seem vulnerable. It's not fatal, of course, but I can definately tell the difference. And the bag gets pretty course toward the end, too.

It is true that the regular General whites seem a lot less likely to dry out.

When you get back home, throw them in the fridge instead of leaving them in your bag. It will keep them fresher longer. I left some grov white out in the sun... completely dried out and wasn't good. I finished the portions, but I learned to just keep them in the fridge when not using them.

No need to get Sham-wow involved either.

My regulars are Lucky Strike white and Retro White, neither dry out. I would be General white would be very similar. I have had a can of pomegranate by my bed for 2 months, and yes, probably a bit dry. But not enough for me to care.

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

                  Excellent. Thanks.

Oh, BTW, I have this round rolling thing I just invented, too. I think it would be handy for transportation. Still thinking of a name. Something with the word "whee!" in it perhaps. Let me know if your interested in one :-)

Still, I think I'll go ahead with the little plastic bag idea. It's thinner :-)

I had a tin of Pall Mall that sat in my jeep for about 1 month. I opened it and the portions were completely dry.

I popped one in, swirled it around in my mouth a second and put it in its usual place and all was good.

Might not have been the best thing for me but it worked just fine.

Has anyone tried using a pouch tobacco moistener? it's a button that you put in the pouch. might work for snus.

                            google "tobacco pouch moistener."

Keeping it wet?... Hmm, I'd say it would be beneficial to keep multiple ladies around. :P

Yes, I did read. Just didn't have anything useful to say.
