I am not a huge smoker, probably about a pack every three days or so, maybe more, maybe less.

Recently, I got a coupon for a free can of the Camel Snus they just started to sell here in the States (I think pretty recently?)

I don't have any reason to quit smoking, I just don't particularly care to smell like smoke and I have a new baby and I have to watch my hands every time I have a smoke. Tiresome.

In any case, I actually really like the taste of the 'Camel Mellow' that they sell here in the States. Of course once I got online and starting reading about snus I decided that I needed to get some 'real' snus so I bought a roll of general portion (hasn't arrived yet). I also went to buysnus and they sent me a little sample pack which arrived today.

I was so excited to try the REAL snus! I popped in the general portion and I have to say that the taste didn't really do it for me. That was the first one so perhaps I'll grow to like it (will have to with ten tins on the way!)

I'd like to be able to use it at work and the camel stuff here is just a little noticeable and Id rather be totally incognito. I work for a Japanese company and though they love their cigs I don't know what they'd say to this 'weird' stuff if they knew.

So being a somewhat light smoker and needing a smaller 'chew' I popped one of the minis that I got in the sample. It was the general dry mint. i was a bit skeptical because the 'frost camel' stuff here is way too harsh n the mouth in my opinion, but at first I thought this dry mini mint was my answer. but i found that after about fifteen or twenty minutes or so the taste took a turn for the worst.

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a snus brand for someone like me? I would like to go mini portion as I don't smoke much and I need the 'invisibleness' of the mini anyway.

do I give the general mini's a chance and try to adjust to the taste? Or is there a mini out there with the same kind of taste as the camel mellows here in the states?

any advice would be greatly appreciated

First, you must give yourself time to adjust to the flavors of Swedish snus, and get acclimated to the salt. Most people's first reactions aren't great. But within a few days, they start falling in love. As for mini's, all of Mocca's are really, really good. The anise is wonderful and I like the pomegranate too

Just stick with it. The flavor is weird at first, but after a few days you will wake up with the first thought of being getting your upper lip packed.

Seriously. I'm guessing its horrible for everyone at first, and I might have bailed on it if someone gave me a random portion. But I got a 10 pack and I was getting my money's worth, dammit. After a few days, its probably the best thing ever.

Welcome and congrats on the new baby!

General is heavenly. It's an acquired taste, just like most swedish snus. Try a portion every now and then for a week or so, and I bet you'll start to love it.

Think of it like the first time you had coffee. Disgusting at first, but soon becomes a favorite.

from what I've been reading on this forum, sounds like it's definitly an acquired taste. And as I mentioned, I've got a roll of general portions coming so I will definitly be giving it a go.

thanks for the tip on the mini's. I think I'll order a few cans of the mocca mini's as well. I really like the fact that no one can see those minis at all.

just out of curiosity, is there a general sort of comparison in terms of nicotine between one ciggarette and a portion of say general portion, or one of the mini's?

also, as a beginner, I'm not sure how long I should keep the portions in my mouth? On the camel tin in the US it says 'up to 30 minutes' but I find I'm keeping them in for about an hour. on the general portions that I have it says from 15min-60min. I guess it's personal preference??

As for how long to keep one in, Americans are MUCH longer than the Swede's. Typical time here is about an hour, but I have gone over two hours before, and some here have gone even three hours with something like Thunder Frosted.

But 45 minutes to an hour is about typical. But some days, I may leave it in for less than 30 minutes. All totally dependent on my mood

I don't know that anything like the mellow! Those to me taste like somebody dumped a little pipe tobacco and sugar in a tea bag. I would say don't be put off by the taste. The saltiness of the swedish snus came as a bit of a shock to me at first, but now I can't even smell a mellow without getting nauseous from the sickly sweet smell. I think Sage hit the nail on the head with the Mocca! Try those and then start incorporating the more traditional varieties more and more. Or you could buy some Offroad apple portion and do a few cans. After that General will taste like heaven...lol!

I can definitely understand how someone who is used to using the Swedish snus would about yak at the taste of these camel mellows, they are quite sweet in comparison! I only have two portions left of the mellow, so after those are gone, I'll be diving into the Swedish deep end...

I've decided any mintish kind of flavor is out. I'm not a menthol person really anyway. I might put the roll of general portions that are on the way in the freezer and order myself one of the mixed boxes of mini's that you can get on buysnus. I think I need to go mini most of the time anyway as I need to be under the radar at work, but once I get used to the taste and whatnot I think regular portions on the weekends or after work.

ah..a whole new world! it begins! i didn't smoke a single cigarette today either which was sort of odd but good I suppose...

btw my order from buysnus came quite fast. I ordered on monday and received on wednesday, that was through the USPS.

I started with camel snus as soon as it hit the stores. I've smoked and dipped for some time. I admit I didn't get the satisfaction from camel's that I wanted. I got my 15 cans (I like buying stuff online) today not knowing which I'd like. I have to say the first couple tries were not good. I still prefer the taste of copenhagen dip, but this stuff is growing on me. I can't stop popping and you can't rival the nicotine hit of a good white portion without clogging the nose with a gram of snuff. I think I'm a lifer now. Plus, where I am a can of dip is 6.00$ while I got the snus at about 3$ per can. For me, that's worth getting used to the taste. In fact I didn't originally like copenhagen perfering skoal wintergreen.

well the general portion is growing on me...I do still have some camel frost left so I figure I'll use that up but I'm mixing in the general more and more, just about out of the sample packs that I was sent. was so satisfied this morning with a general and a hot cuppa coffee at about 8am I accidentally fell asleep...and spilled the coffee on the sofa! cleaned up fine though...helps that the sofa is brown!

by the way, i think i mispoke earlier....i ordered from getsnus, which shipped from pennsylvania. that got here very fast, will probably go with them in the future. buysnus is where i ordered the roll of general from last saturday and am still waiting its arrival.

I find that the swedish snus stays put in my upper lip better when it gets nice and moist whereas the american camel starts to slip and slide all over, especially when I talk

there is also a big difference in the feeling of my upper lip after I take out the swedish compared to the american

Completely and utterly different. made by a different company. I just tried it last night, ill post more hen I have a day of using t. But I can say now that I absolutely love the Swedish camel

Camel (JTI) is more of a rich tobacco taste, along the lines of Lucky Strike and Pall Mall snus made by BAT.
