    Reccomendations for a first timer?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Thanks
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like to formally thank everyone who posted on this thread and helped me in deciding what to purchase my first time. For those of who are intersted; I ended up buying from getsnus.com because of my impatients, but I will be buying from Northerner for my larger purchases.

I got 7 cans, one of each of the following:

    Ettan Original Portion
    General White Portion
    General Mini Mint Portion
    General Onyx Portion
    Thunder Original Portion
    Roda Laket (sp?)
and got a can of Goteborgs Rape for free.

I've tried General White, Ettan Original, and Goteborgs Rape so far- least favorite I suppose would be General, the juice tweaked out my taste buds on the back of my tongue. Really liking the Ettan though- and here's to hoping I don't ever need to buy another pack of smokes again. ****ing 5+ bucks a pack (and they're cheap here).

Thanks again to everyone who's posted, just wanted to update and send out a thanks, sorry for reviving a dead thread.

    Original Post Below

I'm a smoker with an addictive nature, who just can't seem to break away from my love for nicotine, and have decided to switch to snus for health reasons (and from what I can tell, I'll save money too).

I'm American and don't live in any of the Swedish Match (name?) test markets - so it's between Camel SNUS and Camel SNUS for local brands- which I will end up using until I get my hands on real snus.

My question is- what brand? I don't like the idea of a test box, finding something I like, and having to wait another few weeks for more of it. My initial choice was going to be Camel because it'd be a fun conversation piece explaining that it's not the kind 7-11 has. But seeing as I have no idea how strong the taste would be - or if I'd even like it, or if it'd give me my nic fix.

Right now I smoke approximately a pack of Marlboro 100's a day. If that might give you an idea of how much nicotine I'm used to. I've also tried Skoal band dip - but that stuff just tears up my lower lip so bad I can't keep using it (Swedish snus won't do that to my upper lip will it?)

Since I can stomach leaving Skoal in my mouth for about 45 min to an hour (obviously not swallowing it), and without feeling sick, or disliking the flavor, that should indicate I could enjoy most anything with nicotine. So I'm not worried about something tasting too salty or too sweet or w/e.

    Recommend away.

P.S. I plan to import in bulk of at least 10. So if you know a place that's cheap and ships to the US let me know.

    Welcome to the forum.
If you like Skoal, General Wintergreen, Offroad Wintergreen would be good starters. Thunder Wintergreen is great but double the amount of nicotine of the General. It may be too much.
Getsnus is in the states and should be able to get you an order in well under a week. The Northerner and Buysnus are the two other favorite shops around here, both in Sweden, but orders still take just over a week to arrive most times.

General, Ettan and Grovsnus, seem to be the kings of lightly flavored snus. If you want mainly tobacco flavors.

You want variety until you know what your preference is.

I highly reccomend the top 10 as a starting point.

      http://www.northerner.com/en/snus/No...us%20Box-2604/

There is plenty of nicotine in regular portions, you won't have any problems with nicotine withdrawals.

        Welcome,

I agree with Justin, I just started with real snus two weeks ago, and you will want a variety at first. Snus is different from cigs. in that most people don't just stick with one name brand. I was a camel smoker for 15 years, now I have multiple brands of snus. You don't want to order any one kind in bulk. (I'm sure Sage will be here soon to explain) For your preference though, I would try General Wintergreen. That is what I started out with, and I will order at least a can with every order from now on. Good luck with the no smoking. I smoked with the first week of snus, but this week I don't even think about it. They will crave your nic. fits plus some!

Skruf would be good too, little bit of bergamot taste and tobacco, and N&J too, tho it might be little bit hc to starter.

            Arcaed, first, welcome to Snuson.

I agree with what everyone else said. Try as much as possible. You will have NO idea what your tastes will end up. What you like the first few weeks, you may not like any more after a couple of months. what you don't like at first may very well end up being one of your favorites. Just the way snus is.

So don't try and figure out a favorite early. Don't worry about finding something you like and having to wait. You will find PLENTY to like and that really won't be a problem, trust me.

Thanks for the replys, I think I'll be ordering the "Mixed White Portion Sampler" from getsnus.com http://www.getsnus.com/snus/index.as...ortion_Sampler

I also looked at the top 10 from Notherner as linked above, but they want 22 bucks to ship UPS - and I don't think Swiss Priority mail ships to US. And I was also thinking about "The American Portion Starter Kit" from SnusCentral.com - just for the irony, and because it's a nice veriaty - but for twice what getsnus.com is asking (including shipping) I think I might pass on that.

I will continue to look around - as I'll probably stick with a couple select few out of whichever starter kit I get for the first couple orders I make after the first. So I want to get a good selection to work from.

P.S. I seemed to misslead you all in the first post. I'm not really "into" minty stuff. I like minty stuff - but I'm not sure if tobacco goes very well with mint. Skoal doesn't taste great - I just meant that I can stand it. And the Skoal Mint I bought messed up my lip. After five uses I have dead skin on my lip where I was sticking it.

I would still recommend the Northerner Top 10 portion pack. Yes, Swiss Post does ship to the U.S. I've used them with no problem...

I started with 1 free can of gen. wintergreen along with the white sampler. I think it's a good choice to start with. (plus you get a mystery can and a 4 pack sampler from General)

Being as you smoked the Super Cowboy Killers, I don't think the higher nic content of a strong will phase you! I would suggest you add atleast 1 can of Thunder to your order. There's Original, Frosted, and Wintergreen. They all have a pleasant flavor, and wonderfully long lasting nic hit. This might help with the initial cravings.

And welcome to our little funhouse Arcaed. Happy snusing! 8)

Have to agree with everyone else in here, buy a variety and even if one doesn't taste good right off, try it again later. That's how I came to actually like Goat Rape

I'd also stick with portions at first, just for the ease of using it. As far as what kinds, brands, etc, I'd say split it up...try a couple of different ones by General, especially the Wintergreen if you have used dip before and liked it, and some of the regular General portions. The General Mini Mints are also an easy one to use. Gotlandssnus Anis is another one that is good to try...very mild liquorice flavor to it that even I like despite hating black liquorice anything. Nick & Johnny also seems to be one that alot of people like. Never tried it myself though.

Also, if you can get some of the Discreet snus, that's another good tasting one to try.

I'd also order with getsnus.com since once you have 5 cans in your shopping cart, they will add a mystery can that will be tied in with what you bought so you get to try something you might not have thought of. I always get my orders from them in 2 days, and I'm in the northeast.

If the only choice is the Camel, go ahead and use some of that until your order comes in, or use it at least more than the cigs...even using less of them will help you out healthwise until you make the switchover to just snus. Good luck!

Re: Reccomendations for a first timer?

Thanks again to everyone whom has posted. I feel I don't need any more information - I've done so much research on snus in the last two days. I've gone from thinking "snus" was just some new thing Camel (RJT?) was making. I didn't even know they were test marketing it (I live in one of the test markets).

Now I know how it's made, basic ingredients, health risks (lol & US tobacco), several of the top brands, the difference between los/loose, regular, mini and white portions, what those little tools do that I'm not sure what are called. You get the idea. My head hurts.

The variety pack seems like a great idea. I'll either be going with Northerner's Top 10 portion pack or...

...this. 2 days? Ok, I AM on the opposite side of the country (NW), but still. I'm sure it'll be quicker than over seas - and possibly (but I'm not sure how likely) fresher. Granted, it's a less popular selection in their starter packs. But it's only 18 USD WITH shipping for 6 + a mystery tin. I like that. But I may still go with Northerner's deal.

And yes, I'll be using the camel SNUS (capitalize it partially because they do, and partially because I very much doubt it's as low-harm as real snus. Go go big tobacco). If it's as hard on my mouth as Skoal was then maybe not - but as long as I can get my nic fix without hurting my lungs anymore. I get disgusted every time I light up - I have no problem cutting back or stopping as long as I get my fix.

Those "little tools" are called Icetools

Why not place an order with both places, that way you can compare shipping times. I'm partial to getsnus because of the fast shipping, but it won't be as quick to get to you. Still would probably be quicker than ordering from Northerner though! Every once in a while I'll want something they don't have, and then I'm more likely to go to buysnus than to northerner if I have to order from Sweden. Just a personal preference!

As far as the nic fix goes, I don't use just the snus. I also had to have that whole hand to mouth thing, which is why I also have e-cigs around here for now too. But the snus give you much more nicotine than the e-cigs so I probably could do without them and just use snus if I really wanted to

Largely how we all are. Snus is actually better at giving me a good fix than cigarettes ever were.

This is the deal with Getsnus vs. Northerner (or Buysnus). Yes, you will get it much faster. But Getsnus only carries some snus. They don't carry at all my two favorite snus, so really isn't an option for me other than picking up something fast they DO have if I have that need. Northern seems to be taking upwards of like 12 days these days, so speed is a big issue. But for me, under all but the strangest of conditions, I order snus when I have at least 20 left, so speed isn't my thing.

Other issue with Getsnus is they send a lot of snus that is right before, or even after, the Best By date. So NO, if you want freshness, Getsnus not really good. This isn't really a huge issue. Snus really doesn't get bad, but slight degradation of taste the older it is.

Northerner is the cheapest. On my last order I compared all 3 on, Northerner beat Getsnus by about $2, beat Buysnus by about $9

Arguments about who is the best to get snus from are as old as Snuson. everyone has their fans. I have used all the major players, and will continue to use them all just to spread the wealth around a bit. But I use Northerner for about 80% of the snus I buy now

I'm still a newbie myself, and I have always used getsnus, cus to me, they have a good selection, being new, they have a lot I never tried, their prices are good, their shipping is fast and cheap(but I didn't like how they sent my last order UPS as I work a regular day job and am not home), and they have a free can, and the last 2 orders I got that General sampler, which is cool, cus I use them. Now, I am pretty stocked up. Now my question, if I order from Northerner, or a Swedish based place, does it arrive regular mail? I might do that next time. Also as a newbie, I can attest that the taste changes after time. At 1st I found Roda Lacket too salty, but now it's not, and Skruf I thought was too bitter, but now it don't seem to be(have one in now). I know many have taken to snus to quit smoking, how many have taken to it, just to do it? I was not smoking, I was just curious about it, having a boring desk job, I was thinking of getting some Skoal Bandits or such, and when I did some net search, I found out about Camel Snus and got some at the corner gas station, but I really didn't like it, then I tried some Swedish snus, and didn't connect with it, then I found nasal snuff, which I loved, but maybe the season change, made me all stuffed up when I did it, so I thought I'd try snus again, and after a few days I realized I was doing it wrong, placing the portion too far on the side, and I was getting way too much juice and I was needing a spit can, I thought I must be doing something wrong, so about 3 days in I stuck a portion right in the front area, and that was the answer, and now I am liking it. Then my last order I got was the white portion sampler, and they threw in a can of los as my freebie, and when I tried that I really liked that, my can is almost empty, but I've had a few prilla fails messing with it too.
