    Pris removal?

Hi, everyone. New snusser from Indiana here. I've been using portions for about three weeks now, and stopped smoking (almost) entirely.

I ordered the Swedish Match loose try-out box (I'd use the Swedish spelling, too, but I can't remember how to make the proper "o" on a Mac kb) and tried it out immediately (ordered a prismaster as well, since I couldn't see plunking down $45 on an Icetool right off the bat without being sure I liked the loose stuff).

I've never used any kind of loose dip before, and I'm really not excited at the prospect of using mouthwash every single time I need to discard a pris, and I'm not sure if there's a dignified way to remove the pris. I haven't seen this question directly asked prior to this post, so forgive me if it's asked and answered in a different thread that I didn't see.

My wife has been pretty supportive of the life change (smokes -> snus) so far, but when she saw the tryout pack and heard what was in it, she made a face and said, "You told me this wasn't dip." I pointed out the tobacco processing differences, the low cancer rate in Sweden, etc., but if you guys can help me out here, it might save my (growing) snus habit.

    Thanks!

I normally do it in the bathroom or with a napkin. At first you may feel a little self-concious but you get used to it and so will the people around you.

I use mouthwash at night. A good compromise, if you are out and about, is to chew some gum after a pris. It makes your mouth feel cleaners and improves the smell of your breath.

If you don't want to give up nicotine entirely tell your wife would she prefer you spitting all the time and getting cancer (dip), stinking of smoke and getting cancer (smoking) or snus :P

The trick to getting a pris out neatly depends entirely on the trick of putting it in neatly. If you form a nice, firm pris and tuck it away without fussing with it by poking with your tongue, etc, it should stay reasonably coherent under your lip. Then I just pinch on either side of the pris and sort of "scoop" around underneath it and generally they drop out in one or two neat pieces.

I just open my lip and let it drop into a napkin, trash can or other
        aproperate thing.
I have stoped using my hands when removing it, something I can
recomend a great deal, as it's a lot less messy.

4 keys to it, I've found:

          - a well formed prilla, icetool really helps
          - once it's in, leave it alone.
          - napkin handy, pinch on either side and kind of sweep out, I use another finger to swipe any residue, all in one motion.
          - I usually have a drink (water, preferrably) nearby and use it to swish out my mouth and just swallow. Gross, but fairly discrete.

I don't consider it gross to swallow a few bits since it's something you put in your mouth in the first place.
Ofcourse I wouldn't want to swallow the amount of a whole pris.

Thanks for all the advice, and I've been working on my baking technique. I've noticed that as was mentioned, the better formed the pris, the easier the removal. I've worked mainly with Ettan, which bakes very easily for me and the technique I've sort of half-learned from Zero's video. I just spent about fifteen minutes trying to bake a pinch of Nick and Johnny's, which was way more difficult.

One thing that's keeping me from jumping onto the loose snus bandwagon is that I can't get the subtle flavor differences between some of the Swedish Match brands. Evidently my palate isn't very finely tuned.

I'll keep practicing my baking and handless discarding and keep anyone who's interested posted. Thanks again.

Jqlynch, just stick with the loose. From what you said, you were a smoker, so was I. When I first started using loose, I thought to hell with this stuff, it's messy, and it all taste like cardboard. But the more time that passes, and the more you use loose, the more you will appreciate it.

^ Totally. I hated my first tin of loose because portions were so easy and tidy, while loose seemed terrible and unmanageable - just messy stuff. But with a bit of practice you get your system down and it goes in and out without a problem... and is well worth the effort!

Thanks for the support, all. I decided to stick with it and ordered an icetool and a can of skruf stark loose last night.

I've noticed that most of the Swedish Match brands are easy to hand-bake. The only one I'm having problems with is Nick and Johnny's, and that's killing me because I really want the stronger nicotine content when I first wake up. Unfortunately, just after awaking is a lousy time for me to do anything that requires a great deal of coordination.

Not to completely swerve the thread off-topic, but is there a trick to working the brands that are more prone to crumbling? I still have roughly 7 business days before my order comes in with the icetool, and I wouldn't mind having at least a semi-firm grip on baking in the meantime.

Well, the best advice I can give is to be gentile and firm at the same time. Kind of hard to explain via the net, but again just keep at it. In this case, practice really does make perfect. Just try a bunch of different ways of baking, and see which you like best. A way I found which worked well for me when I started was to use the palm of my "off" hand, (right hand for us lefties) to apply pressure while forming a barrel with the fingers of my left. Then, I would firm up the ends, and toss it in. It didn't always look pretty, but it worked well enough. You could always just use the "hillbilly method," grab a pinch and just throw it in, and just kind of compress it with your top lip. Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

 I was about to reply with the classic Chinese idiom:

Gang ru xiang ji : Hard and soft in close succession

Whether making bread or ruling the country, one must understand gang ru xiang ji 8)

After baking loose tobacco for about 2-3 years, I converted to portion, it´s easier and isn´t any mess at all.

Another good thing ´bout portion is that if you happen to fall asleep with snus under your lip (or wherever you put it), you won´t wake up in the morning in a big mess
