    Soapy taste

I am finding it is taking time to get used to the taste of snus. So far, I have used Goteborg Rape and General portions. To me, they taste like soap, not at all what I had expected. Do all brands taste like that?

Hrm...sometimes snus can get a glycol-y taste, though I'm not sure why. Letting it "breathe" for a bit by opening it to the air for a short while (an hour or so) sometimes helps, but I've only ever had that with loose snus, not portions. It certainly shouldn't taste like soap. Göteborgs Rape should have a hint of bergamot, like Earl Grey tea, and General should have a hint of lemon/citrus.

Hello Darkwing - perhaps you've just made the transition from cigs to snus and your tastebuds are still in cigarette mode. Give it a bit more time and I think that you'll find that snus tastes quite fine. You might also want to try a flavoured snus, say Skruf portions or Skruf Tranbar (Cranberry)

The Cook could be onto something, the longer I go without smoking, the more complex flavors come out in Snus, and the flavors I didn't find attractive have subdued. With cigarettes the sdame thing has happened, they now smell very bland and tasteless, and the last drag I took off one made my whole mouth go dry and taste like ass.

General is just too flavorful for many, including me, and Göteborgs Rapé really tastes somewhat like fir needles. I, personally, wouldn't call it 'soapy', though. It seems, that you just started with two brands, that absolutely don't fit with your personal taste. My first impressions with snus were much better, but I also have used some brands, that I nearly couldn't stand.

You should just try some less flavored brands, like Ettan or Röda Lacket.

            Cheers!

Good point - the bergamot in Göteborgs Rapé, especially, I could certainly see as an acquired taste. Best way to see if that's the case is just to have a cup of earl grey tea. If it's got the same taste "like soap", then it's probably just the flavour of the snus that's not doing it for you.

I think, from wandering through my sample box from Northerner, that Ettan portion is the one for me. No odd flavourings, stays in place better without wandering aropund my mouth, and delivers a fast knock of nicotine. Catch Dry Eucalyptus makes a gentle break, fresh and smaller and less nicotine, it seems.
I opened all 8 of my cans and put them in the fridge and I think some drying out is happening. Hopefully putting them in a sealed freezer bag will stop that, although I must admit a drier protion seems to stick in place better at first.
Hey, this seems to be working for me. Thanks for all the advice, this site is solid gold.

                  Darkwing:

                  That's nice!

But really - you shouldn't worry too much about funny/soapy tasting snus. I think I speak for many of the snusers in here, when I say that your perception of flavors (and all the fine layers and nuances underneath) in snus will change as you get more and more used to the stuff. My own relationship with General is a good example; in the beginning I couldn't picture myself liking anything else than my trusty Rapé, and when I one day decided to at least try something else, my choice fell on General - which tasted like crap to me. I don't remember if I ever got around to finish the tin, but I do remember, that I didn't try it again for several months.
By the time I once again flipped up a bag of 'the one taste', I had already tried many other brands - and by that developing a fine snus apparatus - and needless to say, the experience was quite f****** different that second time. Now I really enjoy General, while Rapé somewhere along the road just decided to walk a bit further behind.

Just don't give up on them right away. Go with Ettan, that's a solid choice, but never be afraid to re-order others some day

i had goteborgs rape last night and while it was a great taste (very peppery and sorta spicy)....it has totally wreaked havoc on my mouth. feels like i just ate a big bag of salty chips. just has that weird spent feeling all over the inside of my mouth. must of had a lot of salt in it. or maybe the ingredients that tasted peppery did it?

anybody have any idea how to get rid of that feeling without waiting a few days? i put in general today and could barely taste the stuff.

I just made a post about this subject 2 minutes ago in the other forum. Next time i'll read all the posts before asking questions. lol

I've been snussing goteborg's rape white portion and i got the same feeling. Just like sweat. I tried a 'general' earlier today from my variety pack and i couldn't even taste the thing hardly at all. I had to bite on it to release some juices. Maybe we just got a bad batch. The new guy must've added a little too much salt to the mix or something. The first can of goteborg's i had was awesome!

btw, Opeth is an awesome band. I saw them at the milwaukee metalfest in 2000. It was their first u.s. show i think. They blew everybody away. You might like my old band 'Hollowed' if you're into the european blackmetal sound.

I am starting to wonder if I made a mistake by opening and sampling from all the cans in my sample box and then refrigerating them. Drying out seems to have happened and the tastes seem to have dulled.

I don't know about making a mistake, exactly. I noticed kind of the same thing, but when I popped the cans in my freezer to store them while I wasn't using them, it seemed to help a little. This could be all in my head, granted, but it's worth a try...

sampling is fine, but if you do that keep them in the freezer, not in the fridge

I think the snus would taste best if our local convenience store had a small fridge full of them. That way we could buy on a day-to-day basis and not have to worry about making errors when storing them. I almost lost my fourth can of goteborg's rape last week
