The Burn, the Sting, the Pain!

Lost my virginity this past Thursday. I'm now a man. It took 34 years to get here. Anyway, my gums are burning and stinging something awful when placing in a new portion. And I'm feeling a general soreness behind my upper lip since I've started to snus. I imagine this is all to be expected? I've been following the advice of the forum and rotating sides of the mouth. Otherwise, I truly love snusing, and am glad to get off of dipping. I'm trying to remember if I experienced the burning and stinging when I started dipping, and I imagine I did, but that was some moons ago, and I can't quite remember. Any feedback about your first snus experiences with burning, stinging, and soreness issues would be kindly appreciated.

This happened to me as well when I started well over two years ago, but as time goes on, the stinging and burning will go away and you'll be able to enjoy it more. The soreness will go away as well. Thats how it is for me at least.

      Same here!

The burning will pass after about a week of snus-use. Since long-time-snusers don't feel the burn and newbies maybe get scared away from snus immediately by that burn, this topic is hard-to-find on snus-forums.

It was unexspected to me too, but I just fell in love with snus from the first portion on (which was Skruf Stark). So, long before I started posting on snus-forums, the burning was gone.

It's just that your gums have to adjust to the large amount of salt, delivered from snus. I've never dipped, but surely some chemicals are always needed to freebase the nicotine. Cooking-salt and soda is better than fire or whatever is put in dip IMHO.

      Cheers!

I've only been a full-time snus user for the past two months, but the burning stopped really early on for me. It probably lasted a week and a half, maybe two weeks or so, and then it didn't happen anymore.

However, the other day I tried the portion version of Kronan and it burnt like hell. This didn't happen with the Kronan loose, which I've taken quite a liking to, nor has it happened with any of the other snus I've had lately. Even the stronger varieties, such as Onyx and Nick And Johnny didn't really burn, just kind of tingled. But the Kronan portion just burnt like mad for a few minutes. Any ideas as to why?

BTW, the taste of the portions isn't nearly as good as the loose with Kronan.

chainsnuser-- you're right I was looking all over the forum, and executing searches with several keyword options and didn't come up with much. And, I can't believe I wasn't factoring in the salt as a reason for the stinging/burning! Didn't even cross my mind.

So it seems in a week or two, I'll be good to go. Thanks, everyone, for your input.

Just a hunch, but perhaps the Kronan is made with more low-grade tobacco, being a low cost snus, which may, perhaps, include more stems or other bits or just generally lower nicotine tobacco. To compensate for the lower concentration of nicotine one could add more sodium carbonate to lower the pH and freebase more of the nicotine, returning the same "strength" in terms of absorbed nicotine, but requiring a more basic snus to do so - hence more burn?

At any rate, yeah, same here - the burn went away after about a week or so. Shame really... I quite liked that sensation. Reminded me of nice and spicy food 8)

initial soreness is to be expected.
what I miss is how the gums got wrinkled after a day of snus.

when your gums toughen up a bit, it will pass.
But I get some soreness even now, if I have a day of specialy heavy
                use.

I don't recall any specific burning when I started but it did burn a bit yesterday when I put the first time the whole 3ml into my lip. Went away after a minute or so. It was nice to mee too.

Thanks again, everyone. The burn's intensity is most fierce upon placement of the portion. And then if I don't move the pouch around, it's a smooth ride. 8) I actually don't mind some of the burning feeling, but upon placement of the pouch . . . holy shit . . . it's like Satan is trying to break out of my gums

I'll second that for sure. It has a bit of a pasty taste to it. some kind of grainy residue comes off those portions. reminds me of Probe portions. it's just got a cheapy residue that comes off of them. I don't remember exactly if it was burning, but I do remember it was a bit half-ass and the flavor wasn't nearly as fresh or potent as loose. of course, the difference between portions and loose is always there, but kronan portions leave a lot to be desired.
