I find these Skrufs I've been using seem overstuffed. I have to mash them flat, and then they are rigid.
Portion material quality?

x2 on that - they're like a cross between a regular portion and an 01 portion - ya gotta REALLY mash them to the point your fingers are wet...Originally posted by tom502I find these Skrufs I've been using seem overstuffed. I have to mash them flat, and then they are rigid.

I think old open cans dry out, and that can make the portion not so good. That Skruf can I've been using was an opened can, past date, that I got open, maybe in a box pass or trade, as I usually am open to an open can. But they just seem dried out, I believe. I had a Skruf Stark portion can I just dug out of the fridge in the same condition, and tried one, but it was dried out and uncomfortable. I pitched it, and grabbed a new can from the freezer. I also have an open can of Camel White, and I just stuck one in, and it's past date, and I got this in a trade open too, a while back, but it has held up pretty good. Not dried, and still flavorfull. You can often tell because the tobacco in the portion is like mashed together, yet the dried out ones seem like a fat pillow, that actually seem to expand with air, and become on the hard side.

As you said, whites generally hold up much better. But, hey, no need to chuck dried cans. Just get a spray bottle and put distilled water in it and spray the portions good (then mix them around) and put the lid back on for a day or two. They rehydrate pretty well, but you may have to get them fairly wet if they're really old.Originally posted by tom502I think old open cans dry out, and that can make the portion not so good.

Yeah the General Wintergreen has been my only break from SM and it was only one portion.Originally posted by TBDGotlands has the softest portions. The SM black portions are almost buttery.
The only portions I've had break were General Wintergreen and Oden's. The Oden's was an issue with the end seals, the General was random breaks.

I guess that depends on how good/bad your tap water is.:wink:Originally posted by tom502Would sprayed tap water work as well?
Yeah, tap water is o.k. You can even sprinkle it into the can off your hand, but a spray bottle works better at evenly moistening them. If they're super dried out it really can take a few days for the moisture to penetrate all the portions (or los) in the can. It can help to separate the portions and spray them and then put the lid on the can and shake them. Spray the lid once before closing the tin and put it back in the fridge.
I'm just used to putting distilled in my humidor humidifier and I guess I'm just a purist.
