How to Roll Your Own snus portions

    Supplies need
Tea bags - I use Lipton as it's not heat sealed and I can get more portions size sheets out of a bag. I get 8 sheets per bag, 100 bags per box, and less the $3.00 per box at Wall Mart.
    Scissors
Ice tool - optional. I normally hand bake but a few of them are easier with an Ice tool. I have the most trouble with Oden's Kanel and Gellivare.
Los Snus- Gotlands Yellow for the photo.

Tea bag cut into a flat sheet

    Sheet cut into 8 pieces

Loose snus placed into cut piece of tea bag. I used a click and a half with a 3 mm ice tool

You can shape it anyway you want or use any amount you want. I now do mine on the long side (more so then the above photo). More like a Lab series as it's more comfortable for me. A 45 gram can of loose snus can last a long time. Especially good for those into minis. 90 1/2 gram portions per can instead of 20, plus you get lots of flavors not available in minis.

In my high tax state it's a good way to cut the expense of snus once the PACT act kicks in. Hope this helps a few people.

I had to use two post as the forum will only except 4 photos per post.

That's awesome. I'd go batty doing that, but it's a very nice illustrative procedure.

Good stuff. I actually stumbled across this earlier on another forum you posted it on and I'm impressed. If I can successfully attempt this I may permanently move over to los and just make me 2 or 3 portions a day to take to work. How do these hold up in a snus can?

I've never tried to pre-roll them to see how it would stand up. When I'm out and about I bring some sheets with me (getting some use out of some old camel snus tins. The snus sucks but the tins are really nice). I carry the snus in a crush box made for nasal snuff. The small 10 gram ones. They're fairly secure so if you weren't to rough with them and keep them in a protected container were they wouldn't get bounced around to much it would probably work. No guarantees on that as I haven't tried it but chances are good.

Ah, great. I was just going to post my Fold my own portion experiences, glad you made a home for it.

Did it for the first time yesterday. I didn't measure anything, teabag material or snus, I just plopped what looked like a good amount in each one and folded them over each way. The material stuck to the snus, but not to itself. It didn't turn out to be a problem, as I packed the 3 portions I made in the "ashtray" lid of a general can, and they kept their form exactly, even after being tossed around a bit.

It didn't hit as quick as a regular portion, or loose, but that was fine. It kind of snuck up on me. About 15 minutes in, my saliva finally sunk in and got it juicing up. I didn't mind waiting. Had to only use minor care to get it in and out, and it stayed in position fine.

This is a really great method. I basically use loose now, but there's some time at work where I'd prefer to use nothing than deal with it. What I'm going to start doing is rolling 3-4 portions each time I have to work, and using the same general lid to hold them.

This is also a good method for those who use portions and would like to save some money.

I'd like to reiterate that this really wasn't difficult in any capacity

Yeah, I was thinking about using the ashtray lid on my Icetool portion box for my RYO's and keep my loose stuff in the bottom for while I'm on breaks and lunch. Now you've made me feel a lot better about them holding up, deebo. Thanks.

All in all this is a win-win situation. You get twice as much snus in a can of loose at (most of the time) a lower price than a can of portions. If you're someone who wouldn't use all that many portions a day and doesn't mind spending 5 minutes or so preparing you a few roll your owns for the day you could save some big time money over the course of a year.

With PACT coming up you could take it even further and use something like General Ekstra Sterk or Skruf Extra Stark and get by with a half of a click on your icetool on every use. You'd get 90 prillas (or make your own portions) out of every can and still get the same nic kick you would out of a regular portion or prilla.

I'm just getting started with los, but I am pretty sure I'm going to do that most of the time. I work out of a home office, so I have less face to face contact than most so the mess isn't much of an issue for me. I do like my portions and find them to be convenient for driving, the rare occasions when I'm out in public and when my GF is home (she is kind of middle of the road on my new habit... she's glad I'm quitting smoking, but isn't sold on the snus thing so I'm not going to use los when she's around until I can do it with less mess). I am going to have to give this a try.

I love the idea of using the catch lid for a few DIY portions, I don't have an icetool tin, but I may move some los to an empty plastic portion tin and give that a try.

While I like the tea bag approach and I could always use the tea in loose form, does anybody know if you can buy the same material in sheets or rolls? Not that it's a big deal, but if I find I like the DIY approach, it would be nice to have the raw materials available.

http://www.amazon.com/None-K4164-Dis.../dp/B000RJ3T6G I can't make out how many bags come in each box, but it looks big and is the best alternative I've found so far. It's also the cheapest at $3.50.

EDIT: I just found them on another site. It's only 60 bags. Bummer.

I'm pretty sure you could get it cheaper than that, but even if not, The cheapest brand of 100 bags of tea here is like $2, if I remember right.. I know cause I used to drink it

you can also do it like this:

cut out a 1.5 inch by 2 inch piece of the teabag (cut tea bag into 4 pieces)

put the pris in the middle

roll it up and "twist" the sides by squeezing them

tie the two ends with a string.

cut off the extra string and the edges of the twisty ends with a nail clipper or scissors.

i like this better, much cleaner, though it takes more time to make, also it wont fall apart, you can play with it as much as you want.

Bottledwater: If that works for you go for it, but It just looks like to much hassle for me. I'm in the KISS camp. The simpler and easier the better and it's working just fine for me without the string. I've done many RYO portions and never had one fall apart on me. I even move it around without a problem. Besides that my fumble fingers would likely have a problem trying to tie it.

This really is a good idea. I use lös almost 100% of the time, but there are situations where it's nice to have a portion or 2. Once I get through my stash of portions, I think I'm going to use this method to make more on an as-needed basis. My portions dry out by the end of the tin cause I don't use them much. This way they'll always be fresh :^)
