Freezing Snus to Prolong It's Freshness??

    Hey everyone-

Well, i've found some portion snus that has replaced my previous favorites (CatchDry Mini Coffee Vanilla & Kicks Lime). So i'm planning on ordering a few rolls of each, but i'm worried about it going bad before It's used. I don't want to go and re-order every month or so, for fear of my new favs suffering a fate like the above brands.... So my question is, Can I store several rolls in the Freezer, and if so, will this prolong their life? Say, if the experation date was June 1 2008, and I put them in the Freezer on Feb 1 2008, but didn't use them until, say October 1 2008, would they still be good when I thawed them out in the Refridgerator? Should I just store them in the 'fridge and skip the freezer? Should I only order what I can use in a short period of time and run the risk that the brand be discontinued? HELP!!!

    Thanks!

    Cheers,

    Erik

I'm not sure how it'll turn out in the end, since my frozen snus is still somewhat new. Freezing is my technique though. I have mine in Zip-Loc freezer bags, but if you have access to a vacuum sealer, that would probably be better. I've pulled some out that have been frozen for almost 3 months, and they're still fine. No guarantees for October, but that's my target date also. I only want to purchase snus during the cold weather months to reduce shipping damage. Of course who's to say if we get cold weather anymore? It was F'n 65F here today :^(, some winter... I remember when you could go ice skating around here in the winter. The last freeze we had like that was over 10 years ago :^/

From what I understand, freezing is the way to go. But you can put in the refer for easy access. What I do is keep everything in the freezer. Open in one container and unopened in another. Then every day I will take my ration out and put it in a special container to take with me. For loose I'll keep the open ones in the fridge.

You should be fine. It isn't going to go bad before you get through a couple of rolls.

Yeah, I haven't had any for more than a couple months, but I thought it kept perfectly in the freezer for that length of time. I don't tend to use it very quickly, but the freezer makes that a non-issue.

Every site I've seen has said you can keep snus in the freezer and it should keep for at least 1 year.

I even emailed buysnus.com and asked them, and they said 1 year, also.

Lately I've been keeping portions in the refridgerator and loose in the freezer in a freezer bag. My loose sometimes dries out too fast for my liking, but the freezing has solved this. Waking up to really, really cold loose everyday is wonderful.

I'll second that really cold loose snus tastes good in the morning, or any other time as well !!

It's just my personal opinion. I tried to freeze an open can and when it thawed out, it was stale. I believe bacteria enters the can when you open it and place your fingers in the snus. This might break it down. Same thing happens to vegetables if you freeze them. Ice crystals also form inside the material and break down the solid with jagged edges.

Most of the time I just keep new and opened cans in the fridge. When I come home I take my snus out of my jacket and put it directly in the fridge. The only reason I would freeze my snus is if I purchased a log of ettan or something.

It seems if you take care of your snus like you do with cigars and watch the humidity and temperature on it, the product stays fresh a lot longer.

I keep all of my unopened snus in the freezer, and only keep my open cans in the fridge (some at home and some at work).

                        So far, so good!

it sure is nice to be able to use tobacco at work without anybody even knowing it eh? Stealth nicotine = better production!

I freeze and unfreeze cans regularly without any lose of flavor. Freezing the tin between uses slows down the amount of moisture lost over time. If I have a tin dry out I just add a drop of water shake then let it sit out 10 minutes and back in the freezer it goes. I vacuum seal everything that I am not using.
