    Snus and alcohol

I was hoping to get some advice from some ex-smokers out there (although I bet this applies to snuser's in general), and to put this out so hopefully some search engine might help somebody else . How do you guys all handle drinking and substituting snus for smokes. I'm sure I'm not in the minority when I say that when I smoked I would go through near a pack or more in a couple hours chain smoking while drinking. The more I drank the more I smoked. I have found snus to cover my vitamin N addiction in just about every case except drinking. I get through that by sheer will power. Do you do anything different than normal while drinking? For example, switching snus more often say, every 15 minutes, or 2 at once, or stronger variety (I've taken to N&J portions already, so I don't think I can find anything really stronger)? I already read about snusing and drinking in general (liquids, not alcohol) and I don't struggle with that at all so I can be snusing and drinking simultaneously. This might simply be a case of will power, but I'd love to hear if someone else has something clever.

When I first quit smoking, I tended to either pack a very large pris of los (if I am at home or at a friends), or use a couple of strong portions at once (OR Cran Strong, N&J, Etc...). After a couple of weeks when a lot of the mental/habitual drinking/smoking routines had been broken I was able to keep my usual snus of choice in place without the need for the added nic kick.

I don't think, that it is about vitamine N. Cigarettes give a stronger initial kick, no doubt, but overall, you hardly can get more nicotine from cigarettes, than from snus. The few cigarettes (11, if I counted right), that I have smoked since December 2, 2006(!), were indeed all due to too much booze, but certainly neither for the nicotine nor for the taste. With alcohol, you just do things, you wouldn't do otherwise. BTW, the longing for a cigarette will pass the more the longer you use snus.

Loose snus is better to kill the longings for a cigarette (even when drunk) and I found that nasal snuff also helps (not for the nicotine, which is very low in nasal snuff, but for the impulse to do something different, when drunk).

I'm sure, you'll find a way for yourself.

        Cheers!

I don't drink anymore, but when I did I would easily burn through a whole pack in one sitting at the bar. The only true test now is when I'm working on my car; I don't know why, but wrenching on stuff always used to make me smoke like a smokestack. These days, it's the only time I ever have 2 portions in my mouth.

I remember when I quit smoking I would end up with 10 pieces of ncotine gum in my mouth, like a big wad of Play Dough, but then in time I lost the gum and 10 years later quit drinking. It is a matter of scaling down and loosing the need.

so are you saying that you could put maybe 2-3 n+j portions in at once and that doesn't satisfy you!? :x

I haven't tried that, but that is probably what I'm saying. If you're chainsmoking a cig every 5 minutes it probably doesn't actually take that long to get more nicotine that even 2 or even 3 N&J. Honestly, I'm not that good at snusing yet to put multiple portions in at once .

I have no problems as an ex-smoker while drinking. Even when getting hammered with friends, I don't need a cigarette. The way I have countered this is with "alternative smoking mediums." Be creative.

I love to drink daily, and always enjoyed the synergy of alcohol and cigarettes. I'm only a couple days into snusing, but I've noticed that I have a habit related to setting down my glass and picking up a cigarette. This was usually the time when I'd light a cigarette and not even know it. So yes, that behavioral habit will need to be weaned. In the meantime, I'm finding that increasing the nicotine with stronger snus or doubling up, at least until we've conquered that particular gesture, helps a great deal. Same with coffee.

I haven't had a smoke since December 31, 2007....last New Year's Eve. I've never, ever had this much success this easily. I think the reason why is i have mentally conceptualized snus as having as much pleasurable value as smoking. I'm not sure why, for quiting with American dip never worked for very long. Maybe its because I have to order it online. Maybe its because of this message board where other people like me wax on about snus. Whatever the reason, after about 4 weeks, I broke the smoking habit...even the oral fixation part. When I get drunk, which admittedly isn't much anymore, I crave more snus....not smokes.

Guess we shouldn't underestimate the therapeutic effects of waxing on

Jeez, this thread is hilarious. I too HAVE to have at least 1 cig when I'm drinking, but after I finish my drinks I'm ready for some snus.

The only thing that kept me from smoking when I drank was Skoal, and I would load like 1/3 of the can and it was enough nicotine to keep me from going crazy. You just can't do that with portions.

                              I'm a professional comedian.....

j/k - although since this thread popped up again I thought I'd give an update. Now I've been snusing for over 4 months and I have managed to break this problem. It took some doing for me, but now I just have N&J at the ready (or sometimes Offroad Cran Strong) when I start drinking. I actually crave the N&J as much as that first beer, so when I get both it's like getting your cake and eating it too .
