    Reviving los

So, Northerner is all screwy, and I'm running low on portions. I do have a couple cans of los, but since i rarely use los, it's been in the freezer/fridge for almost a year now. But I'm gonna have to break into it because I'm going to run out soon.

I feel as it if it is dried out, for instance my Prima Fint is all into clumps and all that kinda stuff. But that stuff was like a paste to begin with.

Anyway, I added some water/stirred it up and the like, and just wondering if there is anything else you users of los do to snus youve had in your freezer for sometime.

Im kinda in the same boat. I like los but I only use it at home and I have had some dry out on me. Been wondering about how one could rehydrate it. Rehydrating pipe tobacco is simple enough but snus I a little concerned I'm gonna make a mud pie.

I haven't actually tried this, but I would think that if you just add a drop or two of water and close the can, it would distribute through the snuff in a day or so.

An easy natural remedy; Place a small slice of Apple (about the size of nickle) in the can and it will rehydrate and stay moist as you use it. I have used this method for years and it work great.

Does it give the snus an apple flavor?

No it does not. As I said I've used this method for years and if it changed the flavor I wouldn't use it.

Good Tip. Gonna copy this into my profile area for easy bookmark. Thanks!

Yep, that's an old pipe smoker's remedy for dried-out tobacco. But don't do it unless you plan to use the can right away. The natural sugars in the apple can attract mold if the can sits around too long.

I prefer two parts H2O with one part Bourbon.

I've found that saline spray, like the kind sold for your nose, works very well to moisten and revive flavor when used sparingly.

Whichever method; fruit, vegetable, spirits, etc., you choose it's always best to add less than you think and adjust up. Removing moisture is not as easy as adding it.

I've had great experience using Gin and various other flavored alcohol. Scotch is favorite of mine to add a smoky note. I have read on SM post that dippers caution against using alcohol to rehydrate dip because it makes it mushy. To me that's not necessarily a bad thing with snus. I use dip and never had an issue adding alcohol of any kind to it. I have become accustomed to adding half a cap full of Johnny Walker black to my dip as soon as I open the can. (Was a gift and I can't tolerate drink it)

Jim Beam makes a black cherry Bourbon called Red Stag. Another failed trial for me, but it goes great on tobacco.

I've heard of the apple technique and carrot as well. I could imagine a bit orange or lemon wedge would be great too.

No reason to toss stale snus unless it's moldy or a brand that gives you violent diarrhea. In these uncertain times every bit of snus should be treated with the utmost respect.

Frozen snus most likely won't develop mold, but refrigeration won't stop many mold strains from forming. Just think about how many times you've had forgotten food in the fridge, and what happened to it.

Let me just reiterate I have purchased and used loose snus since 2001 which I discovered while on a business trip to Sweden (I was a Cope User). I always place a small slice of apple in the tin when I open it, it usually takes me about a week to use it and I have never - ever had mold in a can of snus. I also use this method to rehydrate a stale tin. I would never add anything with alcohol such as spirits as that tends to change the flavor and replace the natural moisture of the product. Proof in concept I am still alive to tell about it.

The bolded part is why, as I noted originally. The apple slice method works great if you use the tobacco right away. But if it's going to sit around for weeks, it will develop mold eventually.

Well for sure I don't recommend opening a bunch of tins and loading them up with anything until you are ready to use it that just wouldn't be prudent.
