A virtue to have when it comes to Hand Baking...

I hope this is not a repeat but tonight I made the discovery of the key virtue to have to make a great hand baked pris/prilla:

    Patience

I have been on the los plan for about a week and messed with a ghetto ice tool but mostly have hand baked and basically felt I was doing ok with it, I mean the results weren't the greatest but satisfying.

Tonight my evening cap, well I just enjoyed the process. Just savored the shaping and all of the tobacco. No smashing it up in haste or anything like that. The heat and moisture of my own hands really being what made it hold together and evenly smooth out. Just savoring the experience like a good cigar or pipe. Truly just that care and time into it really lead to just the most perfect pris/prilla. Very very pleased. This might seem obvious and I hope not duplicate but I figured it might be good newbie los'er advice.

Yes, patience is key. I do Los 90% of the time and only handbake now. Even at work when I kinda do it a little fast but I get it pretty well together.

You know, since this thread came up and I'm using an Icetool and your talking about The heat and moisture of your own hands really being what made the pris hold together, Would I be better off using room temp loose and room temp Icetool ?

I have been keeping my Loose snus and Icetool in the fridge then making my pris with them both cold, would the pris from an Icetool hold together better if at least the Icetool was room temp..

The key virtue you have in handbaking is realizing that mouth tobacco is in your hand and that it will soon go into your mouth. Seriously, what kind of ice sculptures are you trying to produce with your baccy? Just pull it out, roll it around, and put it in your mouth .

I found handbaking best myself too. I also kept the snus room temp. I have a ghettotool, and a Prismaster, but I really found the hand bake to be easier, and better, and it's really not hard to do. It's basically like clay, and you just mash it down to a shape, and I held my lip open, and placed it in.

Relishing the simple things can make a difference, that is all I am saying.

Handbaking is just too easy for me, maybe because I've been doing it so long.

For me it started easy, till I started trying to rush it and over think things. I just placed a new order of a variety of Los as I am just through half of my first tin of General Los. I so prefer it. I think I have started to find my rhythm. I can use los most of the time and portions for those times where it just won't work for me. I am starting to develop a preference for white portions as like los they can last in the mouth a really long time.

I agree with both point of view expressed here................I think there is something to be said for the ritual of hand baking (like rubbing out tobacco and packing a pipe). I also think this ritual can help those who miss the ritual part of smoking.

At the same time, I also see that there are times when simple pragmatics wins out over ritual................for this the ol pinch and toss works best.

If you are using los I recommend becoming adept at several different bake methods. Learn how to make a pris quickly. Learn how to take the time to more properly form it. Learn how to vary the tightness of the pack. Each snus is different and fine tuning your baking for a particular brand can help bring out the fullness of the flavor. For example if you bake Roda too tight it will be 30 minutes before you taste anything. Bake it too los and you are more apt to have a mudslide.

Regardless.............do what works for you.............and enjoy
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers
