Noob Box Pass III has risen from the dead!

Well believe it or not but the Noob Box Pass III, after 6 weeks plus of no contact and the thought it was dead (LINK to original thread) has risen. I actually received the box with a note included from CreteCoater saying it has been sitting in his shop the whole time and he came upon it after searching for some tools. I do need some input though from membership on the viability of the contents however...

Based upon his description of "has been in my shop" and it was found when "looking for some tools" makes me think it has been at room temperature (at best) for the last 6 weeks plus (@ 7/31/11). There are five cans of Olde Viking Original portion (Gajane labeled) that are still sealed. The remaining cans are all opened and contain some amount of portions/los from many (near full) to few (two portions left). There is also a variety of nasal snuff products, also some cans/pouches open, some not.

My real question is after 6 weeks plus at least of being "open" is there any concern from a safety standpoint with these? Does the best buy date have any bearing on this? I'd appreciate any feedback so I can decide what to save if anything.

The snus should be fine. It may be dry, or lacking in flavor, but it should be safe. I wouldn't have any qualms about using it.

Upon a cursory glance of the best buy dates for the open cans, all but two of them have expired dates (and nearly half within this month too which is slightly disheartening). Do the dates really not apply or is this one of those situations like many "food" type products that they are "good" for some time after and the listed dates are basically CYA for the manufacturers?

The dates are for best freshness as estimated by the manufacturer. Otherwise, it doesn't make a difference. I don't think I have any snus that's within expiration, and some of it is over 3 years old. Granted, they're frozen, but I've used snus that was kept in my fridge for ~2 years, and aside from drying out, it was ok.

Found this little tidbit in a document on the Swedish Match website prepared for them by a company called Environ (REPORT)

"The elimination of bacteria in snus and their influence on TSNA formation was indirectly
confirmed by a study conducted for the Massachusetts Department for Public Health (MDPH) by
Brunnemann and colleagues (2001). This study investigated the aging of oral moist snuff (sold
in Massachusetts in 2000) due to storing conditions and the effect on TSNA yield in the
products. While 6 months of storage at room temperature did not have any significant effect on
TSNA concentrations in a sample of traditional Swedish snus (Ettan), it led to an increase in
TSNA levels in two leading US snuff brands between 30 and 130%. While some authors have
reported that refrigeration of the finished snus product was introduced to prevent further
bacterial growth and thus TSNA formation, the MDPH study confirms that storing temperature
has influence only on TSNA formation in fermented STPs, but not in snus (Brunnemann et al.
          2001)."

Thank God! I was not involved in this box pass or the other Box Pass: Losers Only v2.1 and hope I will never be involved in a box pass with such total irresponsibility and a total disregard to others on this forum... That is total bull shit and very irresponsible of CreteCoater and GODOFSNUS and a total disregard of others that were waiting on this box after them... Unless you are in the Hospital with something seriously wrong there is no excuse for this at all.... I can see a couple days or so as most that get into these can get busy from time to time and can't get to the post office due to their job or their wife may want to do it at the same time you need to get to the post office, But As for CreteCoater He came upon it after searching for some tools in his shop... 6 weeks later... Seriously Dude! WTF... Are you kiddin' Me... What are you like 5... What did you think dude! You got into the Box Pass knowing you had to pass it on.... Got mine F@$K the rest of you.... As for GODOFSNUS in Box Pass: Losers Only v2.1 ... Really! After weeks someone had to call him...He is doing well but neck deep in starting his own business. F$#ck you.... Again Seriously Dude! WTF... Are you kiddin' Me... What are you like 5... What did you think dude! You got into the Box Pass knowing you had to pass it on.... Got mine F@$K the rest of you....

To me and you all can do what you want but these 2 should be band from ever getting into another box pass ever again.... This is total disregard for the forum members here and total irrespisiblity... End rant....

I just read jagmanns post and I agree 100%.. I trust many of you with trades etc, I hate that a couple bad apples has to ruine this great thing. Why sign up in the first place? My guess is just to be douche bag.. Crete and GodofAss, defend yourselves if you wish..

Both should be placed on the bad trader list.

I would tend to agree with you, but GODOFSNUS has a good trading record. Cretecoater I don't know about. I'd be interested in hearing a good explanation. I'm not sure how a box gets "lost" in a garage, only to be found completely by accident. GODOFSNUS? Who the hell knows? It's definitely discourteous. If you have obligations that'll keep you from upholding your end of the deal, you need to let someone know, and you can be dropped out of a pass. I think it's HIGHLY unusual that business would take off the day a package was received, and prevent someone from getting to a post office.

This may be so, But also GODOFSNUS also has a track record of dropping off the radar on this forum for months at a time.... This should not have been one of those times.. Sorry.... JMHO

Even though most of the snus might appear to be over expiration date that would be the expiration date if it had been in the fridge.. A lot of snus will be just fine if it has been frozen down instead.
Many people have snus over expiration date 'cause they buy large shipments and freeze 'em down.
There should be no health risk.
