What exactly is a box pass?

I've obviousely been spending too much time in the "People and the World Around US" section because I am completely unaware of what a box pass is.

May one of the wise snus oracles please enlighten me?

Someone starts a box with something in it, and sends it to 1 of 10(typ) participants. That person takes something out of the box, and adds something, then sends it to the next person on the list. It goes around the list, and ends up at the first person who sent the box.

ddandb was the first person to start one here, and the concept kind of took off.

Seriousely though guys, my hats off to the snuson community.

I have never in my life seen such innovation and outright craftyness on anything, let alone something as simple as snus.

That is what makes this forum so great

When the box pass makes it back to me, I'll post pics of everything it started out with, and everything added. There are a few surprises that I added that will have you cracking up. I have no idea what crazy crap the others have put in it though!

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Honestly, we can't take credit. Box passes have long been common on cigar boards. Where the idea came from for here.

Hey look! A thread from 2009 - I better bump this!

                        Sorry....

So, I am next in line for a box pass. I don't really know how this works.

Do you take a can and leave a can, or can you open cans and try a couple portions of several of them?

I'm happy to throw in a couple cans, but I probably just want to try a couple portions of several snuses I've never tried before.

Obviously, with cigars you don't take a puff off several...

Can anyone assist me with the proper "Box Pass" ettiquette, please?

Most people prefer that you separate the open items for sampling from the actual give and and replace part.

If you start the pass, then you can lay the ground rules. Type them up in a list, print it out, and stuff it in the box.

There are cultural traditions that, despite the trust we all share, make people uneasy about opened items. So by separating that part of the endeavor you mitigate anxiety for your fellow passers.

It all depends on the group and what your theme is. If everyone has agreed before hand that it's a sample box, then no one has the right to complain about open cans. If everyone is expecting give and take, they might be disappointed if the contents of the box are all "sampled" when it arrives.

Anything goes as long as the group as a whole is aware and on board upfront. It doesn't hurt to communicate profusely with everyone involved. It's a shitload of fun. Map making skills are a prerequisite. UPDATES UPDATES UPDATES.

                          lol

                            2011 Update

A lot of new folks around, so I thought I'd share some info about SnusOn Box Passes. We've had more success with these this year, so I thought I'd share so the newbies to SnusOn can find out about this exciting opportunity. Mods - maybe we can sticky this thread?

                            What it is:

The Box Pass is a way to try out new things by members contributing various types of smokeless tobacco and shipping it around the country. Some Box Passes may have different themes such as a Noob Pass (which has a large variety and is geared towards new mbmers) or a Hell Pass (which is basically dumping all your unwanted shiznit and hoping it ends up with cj, since he likes that kinda stuff).

                            Participation
Open to members of SnusOn of legal age to purchase tobacco, usually a Box Pass accepts 10 names (to keep the snus fresh until it reaches the last member). Participation is on a first come, first serve basis. One person (usually the one who starts it, or the one who starts it selects a route master) and those involved mail their addresses to that person who in turn puts together an address list and puts it in the box.

                            Order
Usually the order is first come first serve, though it may be optional to go geographically, but that is up to the members/routemaster of the Box Pass itself.

                            The Snus
Snus is put into the box, sometimes nasal snuff, dip, or other forms of smokeless tobacco. Usually unopened cans are preferred, but some Box Passes will accept semi-open cans. The general rule is can for a can, take one, replace it with one. In Noob passes, usually a box is started with a lot of snus and sent out to newbies so it isn't required to replace exactly what you take. Those passes are designed to help those new to snus try it out.

                            Confirmation/Tracking
In the past, this wasn't a rule, and it's not required now, though recent members have opted to do this. Delivery Confirmation ensures that we know where the Box Pass is at all times. In the past we have had boxes stolen or lost (I can attest to this), so tracking/confirmation is a useful tool to ensure the Box Pass goes smoothly and without hang ups. Though not a requirement, it is a good idea to track/confirm your package [i]just in case[/b].

                            Method of shipping
To avoid shipping costs we ship via USPS for Box Passes. This is legal, as it is a person to person shipment. If it's a large pass such as a Noob Box, sometimes we opt for flat rate, but this can be up to $10 or more in shipping, so only do this if you have to ship a large box. Sometimes towards the end of a Box Pass flat rate is the only way it can be shipped as these can get rather full.

How long do we have to ship?
Usually a Box Pass should be turned around and shipped within 24 hours to keep the snus fresh.

                            Where do we ship?
Most of the Box Passes in SnusOn history have been kept in the US to keep it simple. Though a routemaster may opt to send it internationally, that is up to the routemaster/box starter at that time.

What does PACT say about mailing tobacco?
Section 3 of the PACT Act pertains to the Postal Service and
creates a new Section 1716E of Title 18, U.S. Code. Section 3 of the
PACT Act provides that, subject to certain exceptions, cigarettes,
including roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco are nonmailable.
Exceptions in the PACT Act permit the mailing of cigarettes and/or
smokeless tobacco in narrowly defined circumstances, as described
                            below.
Noncontiguous States: Intrastate shipments within Alaska
                            or Hawaii;
                            Business/Regulatory Purposes: Shipments transmitted
between verified and authorized tobacco industry businesses for
business purposes, or between such businesses and Federal or state
                            agencies for regulatory purposes;
                            Certain Individuals: Infrequent, lightweight shipments
                            mailed between adult individuals...

This part, Certain Individuals, is what would make it okay to mail tobacco individual to individual. As this is not something frequent that we do, and not a large amount, and it ships to adults. There is a weight limit which I believe equates to about 10 cans, and it is known that box passes can get over that, but walk the thin line so Box Passes are a grey area.
