Well then, someone explain this or this is it for me...

I made an order right before PACT. I'm running low on snus, so I went to re-order from northerner. This is what I see when I go to check out....

So, $94 tax? Is that from bonus roll or what, do I have to pay that? because if I do I'll just quit snusing because thats stupid.

edit: I'm aware it says charged is 51 bucks, and I'm assuming/hoping thats what I'd pay, but still that's ridiculous

God I hope not. I'm about to make my first post pact order. If it's 94$ in tax for $34 of snus than my wife would kill me if I ordered that. I wonder what tax would be on 200$ worth of snus, that would be like $500!

Man i'm going to be pissed if I have to quit snusing because of constant price increases.

Where are you located? The sales tax doesn't make sense, but it could just be mislabeled.

That's like $2.70 per can of just tax! I could never afford that. It would cost me $94 a month to snus? It would be cheaper to just smoke crack on Wednesdays.

I'm located in Philadelphia. So not only am I getting raped on the shipping because it's in PA I'm getting raped on tax and I have no idea why.

No one else has had this happen huh?

I don't think that's right then. Sales tax is around 6%, right? I'd assume the "free" snus has tax on it, but even with that being the case, you're far and above 6% for the order. I'd file a trouble ticket with Northerner, and see what they say.

Btw, I'm gonna move this thread to Shops. I think it's more appropriate there.

Can one of our Snuson legal scholars explain why you have to pay tax on things that are "free"? Like if you buy a "free" roll, you have to pay tax on the full price?

Like when I went to buy my new phone recently, I got it for 1 price, but then they siad "Yah but you have to pay tax on the full price it's worth, which is almost $700". I'm like "Why? Our sale is only for $199, if i am not buying something for $700, than why would I be paying tax on $700? No transaction of $700 has occured"

I mean, what if I am selling trinkets and say my product is worth $1,000,000, but i'm giving it to you for the bargain deal of $5. You have to pay tax on a $1,000,000 item? Wtf is that? I thought they could only tax something you buy, not the imaginary price of what it's worth.

If you have a free can coupon for dip, and take it to the store, they make you pay tax on it.

I'm not a scholar by any means, but I think they do that to prevent "creative" transactions that would bypass the tax man. What would stop me from giving you a $5 check, but then paying cash under the table for the rest of the value? I'm all for that, but I think that's why it's setup the way it is.

It's 6% tax here in PA. I thought maybe they screwed up and applied the tax to the 1000 bonus points, but that's still only 60$ so I dunno. I'll file a ticket with northerner and see what's up.

It's pretty clear that Northerner.com is making a full of hundreds of customers and that right under your nose!

You can't have a sales tax of $94 for products of $34 value, that's just impossible.

Try removing the bonus roll and Poof !

Anyways meanwhile try checking out Buysnus.com

I'm pretty sick and tired of the sales tax anyways why don't they just adjust the prices so the sales tax is included just like many other websites out there do. I'm sorry to say but I've just made my last order with Northerner only because they are the most expensive.

Never say impossible. There was a time I thought a $6 pack of cigarettes was impossible, and that's a BARGAIN compared to some states over here :^S

I would try removing the bonus roll, but that kinda defeats the purpose of it. If I can't use them, that makes me sad. I'd try buysnus.com but in my experience their shipping was WAY too long. Due to northerner's warehouse being in PA, I get my snus wicked fast from them.

I don't think it's the bonus roll, at least not that much. That should only add about ~$2.40 to the tax.

Yep, but that's a different story.

A sales tax is a consumption tax charged at the point of purchase for certain goods and services. The tax amount is usually calculated by applying a percentage rate to the taxable price of a sale. A portion of the sale may be exempt from the calculation of tax, because sales tax laws usually contain a list of exemptions. Laws governing the tax may require it to be included in the price (tax-inclusive) or added to the price at the point of sale.

Most sales taxes are collected from the buyer by the seller, who remits the tax to a government agency. Sales taxes are commonly charged on sales of goods, but many sales taxes are also charged on sales of services. Ideally, a sales tax would have a high compliance rate, be difficult to avoid, and be simple to calculate and collect.
Basically the sales tax is the same thing as VAT. That should be a percentage of the product's sale price - Tax per added value and I completely agree with that.

But what they're doing is illegal, believe me.

What they should do, and what the law actually says is to have the shelf price listed and additionally the total price that includes the sales tax (VAT)

That way people can understand better what prices they practice.

                              Am I right?
