Holy shitaki batman, that's like the cost of a large order to the U.S., you need to contest that though I think you don't pay excise duty since snus isn't classified in a tax code being illegal and all. I'm almost certain you don't pay it, you need to go talk to someone.

Doesn't sound right to me either.

Fair enough they charge you the VAT, but you shouldn't have been charged excise duty as snus isn't covered by that like other tobacco products are. Someone once posted a link to the relevant clause.

I've had this on pipe tobacco before. It's blatantly unfair. :-(

            They were incorrect:

The scope of UK Excise law

The scope of Tobacco Products Duty is set out in section 1 of the Tobacco Products Duty Act 1979. As oral snuff is not for smoking, the only product type that comes close is chewing tobacco which is included through section 1(1)(e). The meaning of chewing tobacco in relation to the act is further described in The Tobacco Products (Descriptions of Products) Order 2003. Section 8 of the order describes chewing tobacco as a tobacco product which doesn’t come under any of the other descriptions and has been prepared so that it can be chewed. The nature of oral snuff would make it impractical to chew and this is not the intention. Therefore oral snuff is not within the scope of Tobacco Products Duty as currently described in UK law.

Last year, around December, I ordered 20 cans of portions, and one can off american dip/moist snuff from the American warehouse - It just came as regular mail would, no tax, nothing.

The Legend by the Charges goes like this:-Quoted from the Sticker! on box:-
Goods purchased& imported into EU with a value over £18(for VAT purposes),and over £135(for import duty purposes),or goods imported from one private person as a gift with a value over £40,are subject to Custom charges. These reliefs do not extend to Excise goods e.g tobacco products & alcohol.Queries about Customs Charges are to be made in writing to above address or by telephoning 0207 239 2449 quoting the above charge number & date.
RETAIN OUTER WRAPPINGS & Documents, they may help to resolve your enquiry.
Queries about contents or handling fee should be referred to ROYAL MAIL INTERNATIONAL TEL: 08457 740 740

Looking at the contents i found at least one of my cans of Ettan has been opened.....the health warning sticker.....has been over stuck with a plain label
Like i Said Before this is NOT a Slate at Northerner.....more a warning to my fellow countryman at what we can expect...once it lands on our hallowed shores as regard the Custom & Excise

My gut reaction would have been to tell RM to keep the package.

As above though it sounds like Customs may have got this wrong so is it worth appealing the charges?

I have had similar problems in the past but more often than not the package passes by customs without a charge. I agree that the amount might be queried though as it doesn't sound right. I agree with Pris, if they intercept the parcel it is cheaper to tell them to keep it, order again and keep your fingers crossed.
