First Orders to Ontario, Canada. Advice?

    Hello All,

Just Joined today, exactly 14 days ago I decided to quit smoking, however to weave myself off cigarettes i picked up a nasty habit of American Dip. A tin of about 16$ CAD (tax in) will last me between 4-6 days. I want to give it up and start snussing due to obvious reasons.

Long story short, I researched the web and ended up in this forum.

I placed an order last Thursday at northerner of 4 tins of assorted thunder and skruf from their European warehouse, and 4 of assorted general tins from their American warehouse. I wanted to see which warehouse and origin is more efficient for my location.

I ended up paying about 15$ per order, since this is my first time I wanted to take a small risk just in case. Im also considering a couple auctions on this website

Did I even do the right thing ordering from northener?

What is your experience shipping to canada, and more specifically to Ontario? Who do you recommend, and more importantly, what should I expect?

Thank you very much guys, your advice and past experiences are greatly appreciated.

Heres some info from another member from a previous thread.........

I whipped up a spreadsheet this morning to calculate the Taxes and Duty that are owed on packages of snus entering Canada.

To the best of my knowledge these calculations are correct. Bear in mind that I'm not an import/export lawyer, a math expert, or an Open-Office expert by any means. I've also included links to government forms for reference. Any input by those more familiar with the Canadian import laws would be very much appreciated.

It runs on Open Office Calc, I don't know if it runs on Excel or not.

    (Free)
    http://www.openoffice.org/

I think it's pretty straightforward to use.
    - You enter your GST/PST/HST rate and Provincial Tobacco tax according to the chart at the bottom
    - You enter the number of cans in the package, the weight of each can, the value of the cans and the cost of shipping.
    - That's it. The extra columns are there just to compare different orders.

    http://www3.telus.net/snarfblat/snus/snus.calc.ods

    Here's an example for Alberta:

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

hi and welcome to the great snus world
importing snus into Canada is like gambling, it depends on the custom agent that is handling your package, it is a 50/50 chance that is caught by them, if it is two things will happen: 1. it will be delayed around 1-2 weeks in getting to you, 2. you will be hit by a huge and illogical custom charge, the chart above by PP is great but you will never get the same charge for our beloved customs, it will always be much more, you must pay, don't ever send it back to customs for re-evaluation, it does not work, done that and ended in collecting my snus from the post office two weeks later as I got a notice to pick it up or they are sending it back to sender, the post office people will not know what are you talking about, at least here, and you will need to go thru the maze of mailing back and forth with them, I have a couple running now for two months and no light at the end of the tunnel. but on the other hand, if it goes undetected, then all is well, no customs and you get your snus fast, one word, good luck

Also, search and you will find some threads about Canada customs but they are not very encouraging !!!

Hey Seb , Welcome to Snuson !!

it's just a roll of the dice when it comes to importing Snus , there is a Ontario tobacconist selling snus : http://www.walpertobacco.com/swedish...393851b19f8cfb

it is pretty expensive and ordering from Sweden is still cheaper but if you want this is pretty close by to you so you can have real Swedish snus sooner . Good luck and be sure to fill us in on your orders once received

I'll just mention this again. I ship items that are outright prohibited [feathers] in certain countries every week for the last 6 years and never had a problem. Now I'm not saying that there won't be a problem one day but there are ways to ship these items so the risk is minimal. IMO Canada is an easy country to ship to if the item is shipped properly.

Maher, thank you for the information. As you said it does seem to be 50-50 chance. Lets just hope customs is nice to me. If taxes are reasonable, ill just pay them, as it seems to be cheaper than smoking and amerian dip!

TommygumBC, thank you for that link, i didnt even know there was such place in ontario. Sadly, they only have general . Thats alright though, ill order a few tins to try them out! Has anyone ordered from them before??

I just placed a bid on an auction here as well, will let you all know how that goes

Thank you guys for the responses!

thanks, buying from the auctions here is even faster and more safe IMHO, I have dealt with PP he ship fast and was not caught by our Nazis, good luck both ways. There is a third option if you are close to US border is to have a mail drop there, this would be the best, I have that and use it often

Maher, Thank you for the advice,I just gave it a try bidding from PP's auction.I Will update how it goes.
Once i receive my packages and replenish my tobacco funds, I will look into the american mail drop, as im fairly close to the border. So i will contact you soon so you can walk me through the process

PP, seems like you have been doing it for a while with great reviews from snussers on this forum, looking forward!!

A can of dip wont be cheaper than $14CAD in Ontario. I dont know about the other provinces. Ive heard that quebec sells them for about $10-12. These are the regular 34gram tins.

In eastern ontario, theres no such thing as marlboros (i know right?) bensons and hedges sell a pack of cigarrettes that RESEMBLE marlboro colors and patterns, but its far from marlboros from the states (i used to live in Virginia, marbies and I go way back).

Cheapest pack of cigarettes at the store wont be cheaper than 6-7 bucks, premium smokes such as dumarier, exportA or belmonts will cost between 10-12.
Keep in mind that in ontario most packs are sold in a 25 cigarette format, contrary to the US.

Canada is making a killing in tobacco taxes.
Minimun wage in ontario is 10.25 (thx heapbag

I want to try General Smooth (Canadian). Is General Classic the same thing as General White?

No apologies necessary, I only know that because I just read that the McGuinty government will not be increasing the minimum wage this year.
