Since the early 1800s as far as I know (only my mother's side though). My Great Grandparents were forced to settle in the early 20th century so most of the culture has been lost to me through the family, my grandparents were as typical Londoner as you can get - didn't even like talking about their roots - had it bullied out of them by a society that only accepted conformity and they conformed.

The only real Roma culture I have encountered has been through meeting proper gypsy musicians I have played with as a folk musician. I am incredibly jealous of the amazing culture and sense of community they have retained. I am less jealous of the discrimination they still face on a daily basis in the UK though.

That's pretty interesting. Do they associate with the travelers at all, or do the two groups stay apart?

By the way - Roma is the term generally used in more politically sensitive areas of the media when referring to them/us. It is the name in the Roma language, but all the Gypsies I have met here have used English as their first language and used the term Gypsy to refer to themselves when speaking in English.

The fact that the term Gypsy is a mistaken corruption of Egyptian in the english language is neither here nor there now.

Well shit...now I feel like a douche, lol. I don't know a whole lot about true gypsies, other than what's been portrayed on television..and we all know how accurate television is. My wife watched that show, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. I found the culture (as portrayed on t.v.) to be very interesting and family centric...which I dig.

If by travellers you mean hippy types who fancy a life without ties then yes - they have little or no connection. Many gypsy families own land all over the place and don't just wander at random. They have a set of events and fairs all over the country that they trade at seasonally (horses etc.) and many are far more settled than people imagine.

I was thinking more along the lines of Irish travelers. From what I've read, they have a similar lifestyle, but different ethnic background. Where the Roma are presumed to be of Indian descent, the travelers are native Celts.

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I have no knowledge of the communities mixing. But I only know several families. I think the amount of time these communities have spent in the UK means nothing is pure and simple and quite fits in the pigeon holes that people like. That way of life is very old and traditional and in the past was much more in keeping with the way many English people's lives used to work, travelling seasonally. It is only really the modern era that has seen the establishment acting quite so threatened by people not being tied to one address for control and security reasons. Unfortunately the result of this is a kind of legislation that induces real hatred and discrimination among the less educated people here.

Would it be OT to bring up Pioneer again?

@Rick Do you know if Pioneer is still being produced/expected to be part of the Great Restock of '12?

You know...I really have no idea. Because Pioneer isn't part of our US distribution, so I don't really "keep up with them". That being said, I'll see what I can find out. Meaning...I'll ask Frank when I talk to him tomorrow, lol.
