That's not entirely true ... to start with there are lots of tax breaks for companies exporting wholesale outside the EU ... it depends on the country. Also VAT is value added tax ... which means that you collect tax for the government based on the value you add to it at the given rate. So if Odens make £0.50 of ingredients in to a can of snus they can sell to a shop for £1.50 then they only pay VAT on the £1 profit. If the shop is Northerner Sweden - and they sell it on to us at £3.50 a can - they have to pay VAT on the £2 profit - however ... if they sell it to Snusline Israel where there are lower taxes then Snusline do not have to pay that VAT element.

I'm VAT registered BTW ... can you tell? It's a massive headache.

VAT is a sales oriented tax (it originates at the point of a sale and is based on the added value- as Squeezy so aptly explained)

That said I thought the taxes that were due to a steep increase were production side taxes (what we here in the US call a Corporate tax).........remember when all the cans of los went from 50g to 45g to 42g..........this was to try and slide the product in under a lower tax rate (which was determined by weight- not value added)

Anyway......I thought it was the production side of the taxes that was increasing.......which will affect us all

I could be wrong and I cant remember why or where I got that impression....must have been in an article I read when the increase was announced...........so take all of my speculation for what it is worth.....
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

Right dog, my understanding is that it will be a 12% increase at the point of manufacture (excise)...... some have disagreed with me, but all I can find about it is here: http://www.snuscentral.org/snus-news...ir-snus-prices

I'm sure this is even more painful for the old timers who were fortunate enough to buy snus before PACT ...........a 12% increase brings the price of a can of Onyx for example from ~$ 4.60 to ~$ 5.15 painful but survivable... snus is still cheap and about 1/3 the cost of my old cigarette habit.

I got some clarification on this. The 12% increase is an excise tax, not a VAT. That said, snus purchases at your local stores here in the States will not be affected by this tax, because they are distributed by SM North America. There was just a $0.07 wholesale price increase per can, following other Snus brands in the US...but that has nothing to do with the 12% Swedish tax increase. Now, online sales where the distributor purchased snus at wholesale from SM North Europe, will be affected by this increase. So, for those of us who purchase one of the 8 regular General SKU's that are distributed nationally (General OP, General Los, General White, General White Wintergreen, General White Mint, General Mini Mint, General Classic Blend (Square Can), General Nordic Mint (square can)) from a US supplier who purchased them from SM North America, you'll be OK with those not going up 12%. Everything else, speaking SM only because I don't know how other companies distribute, will more than likely go up in price with this tax increase.

Disclaimer: This is the jist of the explanation I received when I asked for clarification, but was told that this is just their understanding and it may not be correct. Hopefully it is for those of us who use General...but it doesn't do any good for the hundreds of other snuses out there.

Is Northerner working properly? I'm placing an order with them but it has to arrive at most on the 18th. On normal conditions that wouldn't be a problem but some of you are complaining about them having some trouble.

They finally shipped my order - They said the delay was due to bad weather in PA and workers could not make it to warehouse to package orders - I checked and nothing special going on in PA last few days so just a bad excuses for taking 5 days to package and ship my order.

I have had no issues with Northerner lately, and now that they have opened the US warehouse again my shipping will be cut in half.
