    Snus tax

I was about to place my order on northerner for about 40usd worth of snus and at the end it calculates this...

    Tobacco Tax 2006, loose snus 50g $0.63
    Tobacco Tax 2007, loose snus 50g $2.52
    Tobacco Tax 2007, loose snus 40g $1.01
    Tobacco Tax 2007, portion snus 12g $0.43
    Tobacco Tax 2007, portion snus 24g $0.61
    Tobacco Tax 2006, loose snus 45g $0.57

why does it charge tax for last year? Can someone explain, thanks.

They're only taxing you for the snus they've stocked since the new tax was put in place. The tax is paid above the consumer level so some of their stock will have been bought at the old price and some of their stock will have been bought with higher taxes. They're just passing that on to the consumer and explaining why some of the tins are still cheaper.

I don't think it's a sales tax, though - northerner would buy it, like anyone else, already duty-paid so the price they pay for it would already include the tobacco tax. It's probably a nightmare of accounting and permits, especially for a small business, to get set up to buy tobacco products for export which haven't been duty paid. It would leave them in an easy position to illegally supply non-duty-paid tobacco to europe, so my gut tells me that it's not an easy or cheap thing to do. You'd probably have to be a massive, bulk commercial exporter to work on that sort of level - keeping massive paper trails and being subject to regular audits, etc. Places like Northerner just provide a service of buying consumer tobacco in sweden for you and posting it - they're not proper exporters so I would think that the price simply includes the EU duties in it.

Since you live in the USA, and from what has been posted at:

          http://groups.yahoo.com/group/1822-E...US/message/873

You should (at least eventually before you checkout) get the Snus 'tax-free' (of EU taxes anyway).

I just experimented at Northerner and did not see any taxes being applied to my test order.

I did notice something new... an 'availability' column on the VIEW CART page - ah. nice.

          Snus On!

            To see this tax section
            Add items to cart.
            click the "proccess your order"
            then click "continue process"

I did notice it says "tax free" in green but still lists the breakdown of the taxes it charges and adds them to the total. I ordered anyway, I need some new snus to try out!

If these are standard taxes I would prefer them to include them in the price of the snus on their site that is if this is the tax everyone pays(minus Euro tax).

For the U.S. guys that use BuySnus.com... are there any additional costs not including shipping applied after checkout?

Being no expert, I think Zero is 100% right, but northerner might be able to manage this issue.

After some experiments with northerner, pretending to order from the U.S., I know, that there is some confusion on the tobacco taxes. But it looks, as if this is only a database-mistake with certain snus-brands, that will vanish in the next few days and northerner will manage to deliver to the U.S. without adding the EU-Taxes.

Being from Germany, I will certainly have to pay the new tax. I could be jealous and wish, that americans also have to pay the tax. But instead, I wish they don't have to, just to make this beautiful product more popular.

This could change things also for E.U.-Europeans in the long run.

              Cheers!

I did notice a News Page at Northerner,
                http://www.northerner.com/html/adv5.html

It states, "...orders outside EU will not be affected".

They oughta decrease the Snus taxes for EU Customers - seems to me it might help deter smoking, IMO.

Aye, I'm no expert either. Just hypothesising about why he might have been charged tax, assuming that he was.

Meh, oh well after I get my icetool I think I'm going to stick with buysnus.com.

And don't forget we may not have to pay the extra tax but we do have to pay more in shipping.

I e-mailed buysnus about this and what they said was orders outside the EU weren't affected by the taxes, but there was a production cost increase in snus in general. Maybe they went by this and called it tax for some reason.

I think lifting the ban on snus would be a better start!

Ditto....It just seems crazy that Snus is banned and ciggies are widely available when you take into account the comparitive health risks...I know I would never have got off ciggies with the ghastly nicotine gum and would have given up and went back to them....I actually enjoy Snus more than ciggies these days

                              New Tax at Northerner

I just recently placed an order with northerner, they added a new tax during checkout. I was a little confused, as I thought E.U tax excluded us U.S buyers. Perhaps it isn't the E.U tax but something else.

I've been happy with northerner and went ahead a placed my order anyway.

                              Is confusing!
