    Northerner Portions turned Loose =(

    Hi all,

So I got my second order from Northerner this afternoon. Upon opening of my P.O. Box the heralds began to play, the clouds parted and the heavenly angels appeared as the sunshine burst through to cast light upon the DFW metroplex. And then I opened my package and Fade to Black...

I was missing my much anticipated Northern Energy Snus which is listed as "shipped" under my order status online. No problem, says I, clicking my heels in sheer delight of my precious Odens Kanel. I quickly zip off an email to Northerner about my missing tin.

Scrambling through my scrambled eggs dinner I make haste to clear my taste buds of all flavors in preparation for King Oden...

Trembling fingers (anticipation not withdrawal I had a cranberry skruf earlier) cut through the paper wrapper only to find something slightly better than a lump of coal: Damaged Goods.

The tobacco pouches were busted up like they'd been through 13 rounds with a prize fighter. Four of my portions are busted and made my portion tin look like a can of Los (which I'm waaay too much of a nub for).

Sigh... as I pop another SSRI and drown my sorrows in a bottle of Whiskey. (Not really but almost).

Every can of Oden's I've ever gotten, has been this way. Several portions have opened, or there's just a bit of loose tobacco in the can. I have come to expect this with the Odens, and move on.

Portions busting have nothing to do with Northerner, it's the manufacturer's issue. Don't worry, nothing is wrong with your Oden's Kanel, I'd just use the ones I can use. You may want to contact the manufacturer about this if it's more than a "few" portions though.

See, that's the type of service that keeps customer's coming back. I love to see a business go above and beyond to win a client's loyalty.

Interesting. I've used several tins of the los (did not care for it) and figured I would try the portions this time. I just received my order from Getsnus today.....I'm going to open up the tin and check them out right now.

          ....
          .......
          ...........
          ................

The verdict: No busted up portions here. I guess I just got lucky.

Sidenote: I just noticed the exp. date.....January 2010. THAT surprises the hell out of me...

I had the EXACT same problem with some General Wintergreen...portions just popped open at the end and I had loose wintergreen. I lost about eight portions
I'd agree it's probably just a screw up in the production line. I don't know the stats, but with how much of that stuff gets made every day, I'm pretty sure only a handful of cans get checked for every hundred thousand.

I've never purchased from Northerner to be honest, but I have from two other e-snus stores in Sweden.

I have NEVER received broken portions of Oden's. Considering who manufactures them for Gajane, I would be shocked if the quality control was so poor, Rick, that every can you have ever received has broken portions. Maybe Gajane has special pricing on "damaged snus"?

I do know Northener offers Special Deals; which they do clearly state are on just-expired snus.

I've seen Swedish Match quality control in action. If even the label is slightly off center, the can is blown off the assembly line. They make 750K cans a day currently so I'm sure the percentage is small, but the amount of snus rejected made me want to cry.

I offered to take their garbage bags with me (trying to be a gracious guest). They won't even give the rejected snus to their employees. The employees do get free snus, but it's the same you or I would buy. SwM is fanatical that no can of snus or snus portion leaves the factory production floor unless it's absolutely perfect. The bad Wintergreen can surprises me a lot. Maybe it was shipping damage? Was the can dented at all?

I've never experienced broken portions before, but a friend of mine did with a can of Swedish CAMEL Snus. He gave JTI hell over it too. Someone else told me they received a can of Oomph that had dirt and dust in the can...not broken portions; just dirty.

If practically every can of Oden's you've ever received has broken portions, I can't tell you why but it doesn't match with my experience or any of my friends. I'll ask Frank at Northerner about it when he gets back from vacation and the manufacturer. Now I'm curious.

Since Oomph is purified it's supposed to be dried out. I always understood that the powder "dirt" substance inside was just dried flavor powder or something like that, and that it's in every can... could be wrong, it happens sometimes

The can I got of wintergreen was not dented. Markus and Joakim offer up a pretty good explanation from an SM standpoint here:

I've never had any bad Oden's portions. I get mine from Getsnus, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

Concerning the General Wintergreen, you'd be hard pressed to find someone that hasn't had the portion end come loose. I was told by a Swedish Match rep that it had to do with a new sealing agent they were trying out. Apparently it still isn't a resolved issue, because even though they graciously sent my girlfriend a new roll to make up for her defective three cans, the new roll was also defective. My girlfriend finally just gave up and switched to other brands.

I can attest (secondhand) to the quality control at Swedish Match. My uncle worked for them many years ago, and even in the seventies they were quite severe with inspections and whatnot. I can only imagine how much MORE strict they have become in the decades since. But, the Wintergreen issue shouldn't come as a shock, because that's not an issue you can spot on the assembly line. Hopefully they can iron it out.

For the record, in the four years I've been snusing the only two portions I've ever had open up on me have been Göteborg Rapé and Mocca Pomegranate. Both were isolated incidents, the rest of the can was just fine.
