"Hostility toward Reynolds’ smokeless strategy came out during the Kennedy tobacco bill’s mark-up session last week. “The best marketers, and particularly the people who make Camels, they really do stay a step ahead of the sheriff,” said Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown. Brown considers Snus and another new Camel invention, dissolvable nicotine mints called Orbs, as transparent attempts to market tobacco to children."

Again ignorance reigns supreme. Snus a Camel invention??? And does this senator have any idea where snus comes from and how old it is? I can't speak for the likes of RJ Reynolds but it's hard to believe that children were the target of Swedish snus back in the 1800s.

What’s ironic is that the product works much like a nicotine replacement for quitters. A 2007 Lancet study of 280,000 Swedes from 1978 to 2004 found no increased incidence of oral or lung cancer among Snus users, but a “tentative” risk of increased pancreatic cancer. Sweden has the lowest lung cancer rates in Europe, since so many adults there opt to Snus instead of smoke. A study in the medical journal Harm Reduction last year found that Snus is a “pathway from smoking, not a gateway to smoking.” No surprise there, since it does taste like a soggy cigarette.
I love how people that have never used snus try to comment on the taste of it. I kept waiting to hear how Camel Snus dissolves under the tongue.

At least the author threw in the trivial data that shows snus as non-carcinogenic.

According to the idiots, I guess this can of Swedish snus made in Chicago in the late 1800's is just a figment of my imagination then huh?

That's a great find there, Justin. Was that an Ebay score?

Edit: I see that it is

I read as I sucked so hard on a Thunder frost that the bag split open and I chocked down a mouthful of snus....GRRR

              an oldie but a goodie...

              http://www.portlandtribune.com/news/...07139289636400

A great quote from this one...

"And Snus, because it contains less moisture and salt than other chewing tobaccos, doesn’t require spitting. Which means, Meiner said, that a kid chewing Snus would be indistinguishable from a kid chewing less-harmful chewing gum."

              Oh one more sorry...

"Meiner was particularly upset by a local newspaper ad that she said read, “Use it in a car, in a house, in a bar.”

“It kind of sounds like a Dr. Seuss rhyme scheme,” Meiner said."

Or a precious little spawn dropping acid, or eating mommy's oxycodone, or the ritalin the unparented snot was ordered to get by the school so he'd be less of an inconvenience.

Cross-posting my rant from another forum:
                • We must strive to ever more thoroughly child-proof our world at once, lest we allow the possibility of a fragile village imbecile somewhere getting hurt by something.

If it is in a rectangular container it is obviously designed to attract children, and if it is a round container that is really an insidious appeal to minors, a triangular container is clearly designed for kids, a curvilinear design is to snare innocent youth, and a trapezoid, rhombus, or hexagon is patently obvious in its ravenous quest for babies.

Blue packages are clearly made that way in a clever ploy for youth, and if they're brown that is done for its manifest child attracting qualities, as are the colors green, yellow, red, magenta, chartreuse, azure, and ultramarine, among others.

It is widely known that it is all a clever sinister plot by mysterious evil people, businessmen no less, holding secret meetings in dingy underground rooms, existing only in black and white with harsh lighting and creepy music (cue musical score supplied by Michael Moore) to design containers which, well, contain stuff. And horror of horrors, they might even seek a profit in selling things in something that contains stuff, egads, how sinister can you get!

And if it was encased in goat feces held in a brown paper bag it would be a ploy to market to children. And the infantilization of the populace to the level of an emotionally disturbed mentally deficient psychiatrically disabled eight year old is nearly complete.

In all seriousnous, the key element for snus is the date February 15, 2007 specified in SEC 910(a)(1)(A). I hope Swedish Match is watching and prepared for this. Snus makers will have to be able to prove their product was in widespread national commercial use within the USA before that date, and remains so continuously without any modification of its contents; or else apply for pre-market review as a "new product" which is unlikely to be granted approval. Or be banned.

Anything with flavorings will be banned.

We should send a sample of general to these newspapers/media and they might change their minds about snus. C'mon General, time to get your distribution ramped up. I have a Citgo just down the road.

Then they would be all like : "Sweden: Are they trying to give our kids candy flavored cat piss?".

I'm so over all these ****ers thinking ALL tobacco products are developed FOR children! I've stated this is another thread, but how about all those pretty packages of Twinkies and Ho-Hos?? What about all those McDonald's commercials that air on Nickelodeon. Obviously, THOSE are aimed at children. Health statistics PROVE that far more people die each year from obesity related diseases than SMOKELESS tobacco! I should redirect the govt's attention by filing suit against Little Debbie, that bitch gave me high cholesterol!!!

Okay, so honestly, what the **** are we going to do? Smuggle? Make our own?

I don't want to quit snus.

                          ****.

I prefer the term "informal undocumented importation." I think that is what it will come down to. We'll need help.
