I just got home from work and my samples were waiting for me. I've only tried the peach so far. I like it, and I'll definitely be putting it in my mini-rotation.

I like the packaging, nothing flashy or fancy about it. As seen from another thread here on snuson, flashy packaging such as Camel stuff can land you in hot water with 'concerned' citizens claiming your product is aimed at "youth." A cure for this for Discreet; change ALL of the lettering into cursive font. How many kids nowadays can read cursive? Aren't some schools trying to get away from teaching cursive?? They should also consider adopting boring colored pouches, maybe brown or beige and just take the flavor completely off, or change them to only appeal to adults - i.e. "Rootbeer" would become "Charles E. Hire," because only adults would know he invented "Rootbeer." What kid would wanna tell his buddy, "I'm enjoying a "Charles E. Hire" portion. (SARCASM, my entire post here) Okay it's late and I am obviously putting WAY too much thought into this post.

It was like christmas today i tell ya. Two packages waiting for me, one from American Snus, and one from Northerner; both i had completely forgotten about.
So far i have only tried one kind of the Discreet, Emerald Ice, very sweet, but in a good way, also has the nicotine (i've read around 7mg per portion, can anyone verify that?) that the other American snus i've had (camel) was lacking. Very tasty, and very impressed, thanks a lot Tom. Definitely be adding some to most every order.
Second package was the survey snus from northerner. Got a letter stating that the survey was over but i'd be receiving four free cans from them as a thank you; assuming it was the survey cans included. Haven't tried them yet, but i do like the smell, kind of thrown off by the 'white powder' though. Haven't run into that yet beyond this survey snus.

Fill out the form, and hopefully you'll get a sample of Discreet snus. It's a mini snus, sweet, but not as sweet as Camel. It's not to my preference, but most find it the best American snus, and I can vouch for it being better than Camel in any case.

I have to agree with that last statement. If I had to choose between Discreet or Camel, I would pick Discreet. I got a very generous sampler and some of the flavors like peach were not too bad. For some reason, it just seems like Discreet is missing the mark when you compare it to something like General or Granit. It definitely has potential but needs a bit of refinement. I would love to see a decent American snus! Something just full of nothing but tobacco and salt.

When the maker of Discreet was posting here, he was actually considering our pleas for an American made "Swedish style" snus, and he actually made one, and it was not bad. I personally thought it needed some further refinement, like some pepper, a little moisture, and a full size portion, but Sage loved it. But, it appears that he never went forward with it. I had quite a few of these, and passed them along. Actually, I think I put then in a box pass. I agree, I wish an American company would produce is good "Swedish style" snus, but no one seems interested.

There is really no telling where the tipping point is in all this. The volume of Swedish snus sold in this country is only about 1% that of traditional smokeless and that small percentage of market is fairly saturated with very mature existing product. That fact isn't much of an incentive for new start-ups to jump in and although the majors are dabbling they don't seem serious as witnessed by the drastic inferiority of their offerings. The majors are being typically shortsighted considering the clear progression of smoking decline but large corporations are naturally timid and less than agile in response to market shifts.
And to be realistic a product that constitutes only one percent of a niche that itself is a small fraction of overall tobacco usage ain't exactly a big attention getter for a multi-billion dollar firm. I suspect that Swedish Match is going to have to set up manufacturing in this country before any serious domestic attention is paid to this market and snus volume will have to go up several times it current sales rate. That will probably happen but I'd be surprised if we see serious domestic competition for SM, V2, F&L & the rest before the middle of this decade. Even with SM I don't know for sure that snus is in fact the company's largest source of revenue. They'd likely have to be dead bang certain of the expansion of the U.S. market to risk the millions needed to start production here.
A U.S. factory is likely already in SM's contingency planning but exactly when they might make the leap is anybody's guess. Could be next week but more likely it will be at least a few years hence. It's possible that a smaller company more dependent on the U.S. market, perhaps V2, could make the commitment first but that's just blue-sky musing.
