It will be interesting to see if any of the Swedish retailers are able to survive PACT and still sell snus here. The USPS has already said that they will not mail any packages containing tobacco from overseas retailers and UPS shipping from Europe costs a small fortune. Perhaps we can form some sort of snus buying coops to offset the shipping costs. You can place an order with other snus users in your area and split the shipping costs. The only question will be is UPS will be willing to ship tobacco products that have not yet been taxed.

Timely. I'd logged in for the purpose of posting to see if anyone from North Florida (Leon County) lurks here. I usually place small orders from Getsnus, but am contemplating putting in "the mother of all snus orders" from Snus.com. I'm hoping I might find a los user in the area, to split an order. You've really got to order 50 cans of any one type to really save any money from snus.com and the way they charge for shipping, you don't really get any real savings unless you order three times that. But 150 cans would last me almost 2 years! It's probably a log shot, but I plan to try. Wonder were I should post?

They also say they won't ship Cubans or alcohol, yet I've received both by USPS. Personally, there's part of me hoping that the US succeeds at blocking them, and then gets dragged before the world court (ICJ) to be charged with the various breaches of contract that would entail. Then there's the sane part of me that says the US has always ignored the World Court, so it's probably not going to respond to a summons to stand trial. I don't think they have the capabilities to do it, from a logistic standpoint, so I'm not too concerned about it. Worst case, I can say screw going back to college, I'm going to make bank smuggling snus into the US.

I hope I am totally wrong, but some ex-US and UK based snuff shops believe if they just move or are out of the US, then they can mail to the US, and their operation cannot be touched by PACT, that their items do not have to meet FDA, and the USPS must deliver, and taxes are the buyers responsibility. Now, I hope they are right, but if they are, then this would apply to European snus shops as well, and if so, then PACT could not do anything to affect one's snus orders.

Tom - It would be awesome if overseas sellers can continue to sell tobacco here but I don't think that's going to happen. We usually don't give a crap about the World Court and will probably get some small fine, that will be minuscule in comparison to the taxes tobacco generates, that we will pay to enforce PACT against any ongoing treaties. The other scenario like shikitohno mentioned is that retailers overseas will still continue to ship to the USA and our mail system failing to catch 99% of what gets shipped. This seems like a very likely scenario to me. What could make that backfire though is that selling snus like that will be a felony and could easily get that person in trouble with their home country depending on that countries relationship with the United States. The other thing is that congress may eventually pass a law freezing any transactions between overseas tobacco retailers through our banking system. I hope I am wrong about this but moving overseas to continue selling tobacco in the US seems like a poor business decision to me. I believe that Northerner was very smart in their decision to put a warehouse in the US. My guess is that both Getsnus and Northerner saw PACT coming long before it was actually passed and invested heavily in new software and other things needed to comply with PACT. Their actions will help hopefully ensure that we will still be able to get many brands of snus at a reasonable, albeit far more expensive compared to now, price. My worst case scenario is that I will have to buy snus locally. They have General OP at the tobacco store here for about $7.00 a can. I like General Original and a can will last me a few days which still makes using snus 1/3 cheaper than smoking. The only thing that would suck about that scenario is that I wouldn't have a selection to choose from and mini's are not available here at all except in mint.

I don't see paying taxes for purchases a bad thing, that's done inside EU. Tobacco tax or any tax and VAT are paid at the point of origin, like ordering snus from Sweden, taxes are paid to Sweden or even better, snuff from UK, only VAT to UK. This type of system is fair enough for me.
PACT sounds more like some early 20th century tariff than just and fair taxation. But anyway, I don't know much about American matters.

I'm not as much worried about PACT as I am the fact that PA is about to pass a tax on smokeless tobacco. They are currently tax free and that is why you see Northerner and GetSnus setting up shop there, so they don't have to pay state taxes on the snus they import and therefore can offer product for less. Now if PA passes a tax it will probably be sky high sending either the two snus shops to a different state (most likely AL considering we have the next lowest taxes on smokeless), or out of business altogether. But either way - these sites' prices will go up. By how much depends on what choices they make. And these price jumps will be ON TOP of the increases in cost PACT will be causing. I'm seriously considering switching to Camel Robust when it comes out of test marketing.

the US government is going to squeeze ever last penny from you no matter where you live. My wife and I are seriously talking about jumping ship and moving to Europe. I know taxes are higher there, but I'd rather deal with that than give US one more red cent. It's all about greed.

What this country need is another greedy politician. F*ck 'em!

By the way Tex, you're scaring me

I don't know if taxes are all bad. Won't states be more inclined to protect their revenue sources?

But if PA passes a tax, and anyone feels like moving their stores, consider Omaha.

We're centrally located so shipping times are consistent nationwide and NE only has a 20% wholesale tax that was recently updated (2009) so its probably less likely to go up soon.
