Question for Northerner re: Canadian Orders

Now that PACT has reared its ugly head in the U.S. I see that Northerner has updated their site.

By living in Canada I fall outside of the jurisdiction of PACT when I order my snus from outside of the U.S.

That's the problem. After placing a couple of "dummy" or test orders from your site I have found that when I attempt to place an order for a snus that is available in both the U.S. & Swedish warehouses the checkout section automatically defaults to the goods coming out of the U.S. and therefore my only shipping option is UPS.

I do not want to use UPS to have my snus delievered. It's more expensive to ship without even factoring in any untold "brokerage" charges on top of guaranteed CBSA duty/gst/excise charges.

I am guessing that it defaults to the U.S. warehouse as I am in North America!?! However, I would like the choice of having my snus shipped from Sweden therefore avoiding UPS at all costs.

I know that Northerner must be quit busy with all of these new changes but I wanted to throw this one in the suggestion box.

Choose "Products in Sweden Warehouse Only" on the left side of the Northerner Website. I believe that should solve your problem.

No, that doesn't solve the problem. The only way to solve the problem currently is by ordering a snus that is not available at all in the U.S.

I tried a couple of "test" orders this morning as well, and had the same problem. I tried setting my location to "EU" and "Other" and to only show products from the SE warehouse. It always defaults to shipping from the US via UPS Standard before checkout. I hope they can get that fixed.

I sent Northerner an e-mail through their website this morning. Hopefully I'll get a reply. When/if I do I'll let you know what they say.

Hopefully they can fix this, otherwise they will lose me as a customer. I'm not saying that out of anger, it's just that I refuse to use UPS.

When I came home from work I checked my e-mail and got a reply from Northerner:

"You are now able to order to Kanada from Sweden. We are sorry that you had problems with that before."

Unfortunately, after going on the website thereafter I am still running into the same problem in that any snus available from either Sweden or the U.S. automatically shows that my order will come from the States via UPS.

Perhaps I didn't word my question clearly. Hopefully Frank at Northerner will read this thread and can fix the problem.

I know when I change the "country" in my address info it changes the shipping options/warehouse. I'm sure they could just change the parameters of Canadian addresses to allow for the choice of which warehouse one would like the snus to ship from.

Just order from a Swedish site that is not Northerner.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I like Northerner and would like to continue using them (plus I have accumulated bonus points after placing many orders).

Maybe I'm mistaken but I think this is a problem that can be fixed. If I need to order from somewhere else (i.e. buysnus) so be it, but it's at least worth a try to ask.

I'm still having the same problem too. I also refuse to use UPS. I will send Northerner an email.

Does anyone know if the USPS can handle tobacco under PACT if the parcel is going out-of-country?

From my (limited) understanding of PACT I don't believe that tobacco can be shipped via USPS at all (regardless of destination).

I sent one more e-mail to Northerner customer service in the hopes that maybe the first query wasn't explained clearly by myself.

Here is the reply I received this time:

"You can order from our swedish warehouse, but not products that are sold in the US warehouse as well. For Canada the US warehouse is default because its much closer, but everything else you can order from Sweden instead. We are sorry that you can't choose warehouse."

This is unfortunate news for those living in Canada. As of right now the # of brands available in the U.S. is limited but it still includes all Swedish Match products which are quite numerous and popular.

To any Canadians reading this I would strongly discourage having your snus shipped to you via UPS as IMO it will be cost prohibitive.

I just got a similar email as the one above. I hope that they consider this a bug in the website, I don't see any reason why they would intentionally not allow Canadians to order whatever we want from the Swedish warehouse.

I just placed an order with BuySnus, shipped via Swedish Post.

                          Hey Snarfblat,
I hope that Northerner eventually sorts this out for us. Problem is I can imagine that their Canadian customers only make up a very small percentage of their orders so I doubt this will be a priority (especially considering all the posts on here from Americans having issues with their orders).

I will be placing an order with Buysnus soon too. Personally I was finding that my orders coming from Buysnus in the past were getting charged duty more often than when I ordered from Northerner. Could just be coincidence, but I wanted to keep riding that lucky mojo.

                          Good Luck!!
