    No burning?

This has baffled me since I began my friendship with snus. What is it about snus, as opposed to American smokeless tobacco, that makes it so easy to swallow? With American ST even without swallowing, I would get the most horrible heartburn...with snus not even a twinge of heartburn and I have acid reflux...it's amazing!

American tobacco is fire dried and fermented, while snus is air dried and steam pasteurized. I think it's this difference in processing that makes snus juice more tolerable to the stomach.

This was the biggest reason for my switch from diping to Snusing. If they would just make Copenhagen Swallowable id go right back, but for now the Swedes are one step ahead.

Wonder why American dip uses this inferior process to make its tobacco? Maybe a culture thing.

It wasn't always the case that Swedish snus was semi-pasteurized like it is now. Ettan was one of the only brands that used what is now known as the Gothia tek process (I believe General may have also used it), before the Swedish government mandated that process (or something similar) be used for all subsequent production. This was in the early seventies, and most snus prior to that had been heat cured similar to our US snuff.

As such, a lot of old school snusers in Sweden still spit the juice. Others swallowed the juice in the old stuff just like they do with the new, so if you ever want to emulate what it was like being a hardcore snuser in the late sixties, grab a can of Cope and gradually swallow the juice until your stomach is immune to the ill effects. ops:

Man, gutting Copehagen is the true test of a man. I never got myself used to it because it feels like it cant be even REMOTELY healthy.

I used to gut the Cope, and it took a little getting used to.

Swallowing the Camel Mellow juices actually made me throw up...

Personal opinion here with various testing, But I think its all about the position. Since the common stereotype would be "snus goes in upper lip" when you put it up there, it gets moist still, but the majority of the saliva follows the rules of gravity an collects towards the bottom of your mouth. What DOES drip from snus is diluted in that saliva and easier to swallow.

American snuff would be bottom of lip. Being almost smack dab in the middle of all the built up saliva thats created. And the pinch/pouch being closer it'll just concentrate.

And to go with upper and lower lip. When placed in the upper lip it doesn't move around nearly as much as bottom. So therefore not as much saliva is collected in the pouch/pinch and less drip to begin with. Where as opposed to the bottom with with your jaw moving and more movement coming from your bottom lip just moves/swirls the snuff around and moves the saliva around it. And once again just concentrates it.

EDIT: I gutted cope as well. Kodiak is one I was never able to gut, however.

It's traditional and produces a fine taste. Fire curing and fermentation are used around the world to produce smokeless tobacco, including Germany. Snus is an exception and quite unique... and yeah, of course I agree, it's simply superior for allday use.

But also I guess one cannot make Cope with air-cured and steam-pasteurized tobacco.

                Cheers!
