    Black Portions

    Gentlemen,
I read that black portion snus, such as General Onyx and Grovsnus Svart go through the same production process as white portion snus, where the point where tobacco juice is sprayed on the portions is skipped.
My question is: What is it that makes black portions black? Is it simply for looks, or does it serve a purpose?
Thanks in advance for any answers you provide.

I'm pretty sure it's just for looks. However that black material sure is nice and soft.

I'm under the same belief as baker, just for looks. Wouldn't snus be so boring if they were all the same color?! I'm hoping for some reds, blues, pinks, and purples! 8)

I tend to agree, it probably is a looks thing. I've always been curious though.

I thought that black portions are supposed to be a softer (kinder gentler) material than white. Never actually tried any though.

I use LD black. I think that there are no visible stains on black portions and that is why it looks better than brown spots on white bag. Just marketing gimmick.

              Black portions

I was with Gallaher in Sweden during the development of LD Black. The concept was generally to create a product which would not repel European (non-Nordic) consumers from the product. No ammonia smell, but an inviting one, and no brown stains on the portion material.

The colored portion material was sourced from Germany, and had to be approved by Swedish food authorities for oral use. Several colors were tested and approved, but we went with Black/"Salmiak" as it was a viable niche flavor for the Swedish market.

A fringe benefit has been the perceived softness of the portion material, which some have said is 'luxurious.' Definitely a bang-for-the-buck product which was the point of the "LD" line to begin with.

                  Hi,

The black pouches are made the same way as the white ones. The purpose of black pouches is merely about product perception. Don't know about you guys but I really like the pouches like that.

I love them, especially for the color. Hell, when I smoke the cigarettes are black, so why not the snus?
