The blood nicotine level spikes like that because cigarettes are inhaled through the lungs, and therefore the drug (nicotine in this case) is absorbed and deposited into the bloodstream through the alveoli in your lungs. There is a huge surface area of alveoli in your lungs, that allows nearly all of the nicotine to be absorbed into your bloodstream incredibly quickly. Because it is absorbed so quick, it is also taken out of your system very quickly.

Snus is basically absorbed in the same manner a sublingual drug is. although it is absorbed at the buccal mucosa (your gums, if i am not mistaken, although I'm not 100% on the scientific name). This means that because snus is not smoked and the buccal mucosa has less surface area than the alveoli (not to mention the fact that the snus has much less surface area than say, the amount of cigarette smoke) your body absorbs it slower. It absorbs it slower, and therefore more evenly than if you were to smoke a cigarette. Ontop of that, you only get 20-30% of the nicotine in a pouch of snus, if im not mistaken as well.

If we were getting 100% of the nicotine, that'd be bad news for most sterk users..as well as chainsnusers

LD50's only take into account organisms that haven't been exposed to it prior (and therefore have a tolerance to it) and, they dont have sublingual listings usually. The closet one you'll get is the "oral" listing. For reference, here is the LD50 of nicotine according to the material safety data sheet on nicotine:

      Oral, mouse: LD50 = 3340 ug/kg
      Oral, rat: LD50 = 50mg/kg
      Skin, rabbit: LD50 = 50 mg/kg
      Skin, rat: LD50 = 140 mg/kg

tl;dr = nicotine spikes because it is smoked and therefore reaches the bloodstream faster.

edit #2: there is this though...Sold in 2.0 and 4.0 mg per piece of gum. In a 4.0 mg piece, 3.4 - 4.0 mg is considered bio-available (According to Physicians Desk Reference) -- so I may be off on my 20-30% nicotine absorption thing; my sublingual pharmacology is a little rusty lol

apparently alot of people (self included) think they are experts, while they are not. I thought your question about the graph was a good one, i'd be interested in seeing too.

I know there are other factors including PH, personal use, saliva etc. however. Roughly, on average. If i put in a portion of 8mg nicotine for 20 mins and than spit it out, about how much nicotine is that? Or how many cigarettes worth? im curious about how much nicotine you get with time.
            Hi Paladinx,

Your comment on slower nicotine uptake relative to cigarettes is correct. We've sent away a request to some collegues to see if we have a good comparative estimate in the span of 20 minutes.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I am a snus user, I enjoy the product. Just that with snus there is so much information and research etc. Much different than american tobacco products.

I have seen that graph for awhile, and i saw an expert forum, so i figured why not bring up some questions about it.

I never said snus tasted bad, I said some of the original stuff smells like cat piss when it gets warm. I still use it, i just hate the smell of it when its not refrigerated. your just blowing smoke out of ur ass im going to ignore

anyway let me continue the conversation with anyone else on here who isn't a forum zealot. If I were to make the graph, i probably would have compared the nicotine level of a smoker having a cigarette every 30 mins, to someone who uses a portion every hour and keeps the portion in for 20 mins at a time. This would be a better comparison in my opinion. Who cares? I dunno. Maybe its dumb, its not even like I CARE, i just was always curious about it, and figured why not ask here if anyone is open to an intelligent discussion.
                You're weird

If you want the largest amount of nicotine from snus, I would recommend purchasing General Ekstra Sterk Los. It contains 13mg of nicotine per gram and has an 8.3 pH level. Remember, the nicotine from loose snus is absorbed more rapidly compared to portioned varieties.
