I'd assume it's because the cost of materials doesn't mean much as compared to the cost of manufacturing. The lesser amount of materials used probably doesn't account for much, if at all, compared to the overhead involved to make the product.

That, and minis are a relatively new thing as far as snus goes, which probably means that they require entirely separate machines. So, some of the cost is going to be for the cost of the new machines.

I still think the best answer to this question is "because they can."

Not meaning to espouse mean-spirited tripe about our friends in the snus manufacturing world, but the reason they charge you the same price for 10g of minis is because you will pay it, and because they do not want to offer a product that could potentially develop a user that spends less than they previously did. I know the answer that they will give is that the real cost is in manufacturing and that they still have to make 20 portions, but that is a load of bs. Several minor adjustments in design do not constitute a price jump of more than 50%, that is silly. SM and friends just want to make sure that, if you are using a can a day, it is generating a specific amount of revenue, regardless of what kind of snus it is.

I have bought and enjoyed minis before, but I would not consider making them a regular for this exact reason. 3USD=10g minis or 45g loose? They made my decision for me on that one.

Don't mean to threadjack, but does anyone here make their own mini/regular portions out of los? It would bypass the price issue. I know the idea comes up every now and again, but wondering if anyone did it regularly

Stubby regularly makes his own portions with teabag material.

I agree with you timoteo. I really enjoy mini's especially when I am at work but feel like a sucker by paying more for less. There was another thread on this forum and the answer from Swedish Match was along the lines of production costs being the same and mini users tend to use less. Somehow, I just get the feeling that the manufacturers could care less about what mini users think as long as you are still buying them. At least stick 30 portions in a can so we think we are getting more. One alternative to this is to buy Oomph snus from Northerner as they pack 24 portions to a can.

Hey there Twisted. We meet in the strangest places.

Yes, I do mostly roll your own snus. After I use up the 40 cans of portions in the deep freeze I'll likely go to RYO exclusively. Lot of different reason.

I can't for the life of me not get a mud slide in relatively short order. I'll try it again in the future, but for now....

Another big one is I live in a high tax state for snuff and after the PACT act kicks in my snus habit is going to get a good deal more expensive. Rolling my own portions will cut the cost considerable. Besides that I have yet to find a portion that I don't like the loose better... with one exception being Grov.

If your into minis you can get an outrageous amount out of one can of loose.

                  Here's a little help

man, I always built up the idea in my mind to be complicated, but your system is really simple. I will likely try this tonight, as I have a bunch of teabags I'm not making and drinking, and would like to use los at work with less fuss.

Maybe if I mixed in some of the tea I'd get some caffeine in a portion too? Well I won't get ahead of myself.

thanks for the link stubby. those ryo portions do look really good.

Govegan- yeah it seems like a waste of money but i think theyre a great idea. ive used em on dates, at work, and in court, docters office etc. but I dig the larger portions anyway. and i enjoy los from time to time as well. but keeping a can of minnis or two in the freezer is a good idea.

i like the General ones the best, but id certainly grab a can of ettan and grov too if they were around!

I've seen other methods that get into heat sealing and all that. If I remember correctly Toque was interested in making a snus and was looking into ideas for RYO portions. All of them where making it way to complicated in my opinion. This method is easy and I have yet to have one fall apart on me. I can even move it around with no problems.
